Job summary

Pay Range:

$34.50-$50.54 per hour

The compensation range listed above represents the good-faith range Cary Medical Center anticipates relying upon when making an offer for this position. Starting pay is determined based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and market conditions.

The RN in One Day Surgery provides care in the ambulatory setting directed toward meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient in One Day Surgery and Endoscopy Suite. Is a resource person and teacher. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain steady level of productivity. Is a self-starter, compatible and supportive and a team player. Communicates on behalf of patient. Reflects the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statements of the department.

Essential Duties:
  • Collects data and reviews health status of patient during Pre-Admission Screening or on admission to One day surgery. Completes anesthesia pre-op evaluation sheet.
  • Admits patient to the unit and verbally verifies identity with name and date of birth.
  • Verifies properly completed lab work, permits, H&P, and pre-op checklist.
  • Obtains temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, 02 Sat, and allergies.
  • Informs appropriate personnel of pertinent information obtained.
  • Directs patients to the proper departments for prescribed exams.
  • Gives care to the patient, as indicated by individual patient needs before and after their surgical procedure, endoscopic procedure, or other procedures through One Day Surgery.
  • Keeps current and accurate records on all patients.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of disease/surgical conditions, care required and good judgement.
  • Performance reflects knowledge in all areas of care specific to outpatient surgery and procedures (i.e., GI, conscious sedation, arteriograms).
  • Ability to operate and manage equipment safely and correctly.
  • Organizes and manages nursing activities reflecting due consideration for patient's needs and the needs of the facility and staff.
  • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; a self-starter; compatible and supportive; a team player.
  • Carries out medical orders.
  • Starts and discontinues IVs according to order and follows correct policy and procedure.
  • Knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration, based on age of the patient and patient's condition.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe preoperative assessment on all patients and reassesses, as needed post operatively. This includes pediatric, geriatric, and general patient population.
  • Ability to perform pain assessment, intervention, management and patient/family education.
  • Provides and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Provides patients with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.
  • Identifies physical symptoms and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
  • Formulates a teaching plan, based on identified patient learning needs, and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching , as appropriate, from pre-op to discharge.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to One Day Surgery Nurse Manager, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as needed and as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients' needs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians in performing procedures in the GI Laboratory.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in all areas of care specific to the GI Laboratory, including conscious sedation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Ability to work unsupervised in capacity of a licensed, professional nurse providing quality care to One Day Surgery patients.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work duties to the best advantage of the patient.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Practices good guest relations
  • Maintains a good working relationship and effective communication both within the department and with other departments for the benefit of the patient.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during treatment and special procedures.
  • Maintains an environment that provides the patient and family with feelings of safety and security.
  • Meets the identified organizational requirements, work habits & promotes a collaborative & cooperative work environment.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Complies with the local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Requirements
Education or License:
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Maine.
  • Current ACLS and BLS Certification.
Availability:
  • With consideration to our patients’ and staff needs, you may need to work on days, evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays and may need to float to other units.
