Job Summary

To assess, develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing care and treatment for patients in the assigned oncology clinical area, coordinating operations of chemotherapy regimens, patient scheduling, records, and admission for adult cancer patients. The role includes counseling patients and families, acting as liaison among clinical staff, assisting physicians in research and trials, and addressing patients' physiological and psychological needs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, initial and ongoing assessment, patient education, and management of chemotherapy effects.
  • Coordinate care for patients enrolled in protocols and clinical trials.
  • Assist physicians in collecting data for research and clinical trials.
  • Assess and document each patient’s physical, social, and emotional status during the outpatient admissions process.
  • Refer patients to social work and financial assistance counselors as needed.
  • Monitor patient responses before and after procedures and make technical and medication changes as appropriate.
  • Review physician orders, determine patients’ general physical and mental condition, and ensure daily oncology operations adhere to protocol.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of chemotherapy protocols, participate in weekly tumor conferences, and review IRB protocols before administering chemotherapy.
  • Monitor and maintain associated equipment and assist in keeping the work environment safe, organized, and clean.
  • Formulate and monitor individualized treatment plans and educational needs for each patient.
  • Administer chemotherapy drugs in accordance with orders, protocols, and laboratory values.
  • Maintain effective communication channels with all team members and report unusual occurrences.
  • Facilitate open communication with health team members and other staff to ensure optimum performance.
  • Serve on nursing councils, hospital or medical center committees, task forces, or project teams to improve patient care.
  • Complete quality assurance checklists and monitor nursing checklists.
  • Manage impact scheduling, nursing assessments, clinical notes, and billing responsibilities.
  • Handle inventory management and Texas Health… (TJC) compliance duties.
Education and Experience
  • Must be licensed as an RN for at least one (1) year.
  • Valid RN license required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Two (2) years of RN experience in Oncology.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Certified Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (CPHON) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of clinical nursing care procedures and oncology protocols.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and team collaboration.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, tools, and programs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Exposure to high noise levels, heat and cold, biohazardous conditions, radiation, bloodborne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and toxins. Frequent bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, climbing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, twisting, and walking. Occasional work beyond regular hours and travel to off‑site locations.
