Job summary

A Brief Overview

Provides professional nursing care within the radiology department utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients undergoing diagnostic and endovascular radiology procedures.

What You Will Do
  • Assists medical, radiology, and nursing staff with special procedures and treatments that require professional nursing skills as needed. a. Monitors and evaluate the clinical status of patient in holding area/procedure room and prioritizes activities to ensure patient care activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner. b. Provides nursing care according to medical regime and the nursing intervention appropriate for the patients' conditions and according to physician orders, established standards, policies and procedures. c. Demonstrates knowledge and technical, interpersonal and critical thinking skills to provide care, maintain clinical competency and meet age-specific patient needs within the unit.
  • Assesses, plans and implements care of assigned patients consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, and patient safety practices. a. Obtains pertinent patient history, makes relevant clinical observations, and document such data in the record according to policy. Informs the patient of the procedure and ensure that all preparation instructions have been completed. Obtains the necessary consent forms. b. Performs venipunctures and place intravenous lines as indicated for either contrast injections or sedation. Administers medications as needed. Applies pain management measures. c. Assists physician and radiology staff and provide care during treatments/procedures/ examination. d. Operates infusion pumps, monitoring equipment and other associated equipment during the intervention procedures. e. Performs continual clinical assessment (including vital signs, blood sugars, EKG changes, etc.) of the patient’s status and monitors response of patient to treatment while in the Interventional Radiology/Cardiac Lab area and report to the attending physician or applicable health team member any abnormalities detailed in the procedure manual as well as any apparent untoward events which might require further physician or medical care.
  • Administers moderate sedation medications as ordered by the Provider and monitors patients during the sedation process according to hospital policy.
  • Maintains patient medical records; documents patient status and care given; performs charting duties; records activities and observations. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
  • Maintains control and ensures the appropriate distribution of all controlled substances utilized in Interventional Radiology. Takes inventory and restock all supplies necessary to administer contrast media and sedation medication.
  • Responds to Code Blue and/or intervenes in patient problems and medical emergencies. Initiates and/or assists with CPR/BLS/ACLS/PALS as required.
  • Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff regarding all aspects of patient needs (i.e., status, treatment and outcome, coordinating exams, requisitions supplies, obtains medical records, etc.) in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with MEDCARE standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding examination, treatment, and outcome.
  • Transports patients, specimens, equipment and supplies to and from various areas.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve care. Supports and is involved in the organization’s Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Provides instruction, assigns and supervises LPN and other support personnel assigned to unit to complete the initial and ongoing assessments of patients and to provide clinical assistance as needed. Assists in the orientation and oversee the supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and safety, environment and infection control standards.
  • Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes.
  • Performs point of care laboratory testing as needed for procedures.
