Job summary

Western State Hospital is recruiting an RN II Shift Supervisor for the 2 Pine, 2 Hickory, and 2 Elm units. This role leads nursing care in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital, ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment and adherence to care protocols.

Responsibilities include supervising nursing staff, coordinating with an interdisciplinary team, and documenting patient progress while promoting recovery and trauma-informed care.

Qualifications

• Must hold current RN license eligible to practice in Virginia.
• Must currently be a WSH employee for at least six months.
• Must currently hold a RN II position.
• Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff; effective communication required.
• Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team and assess/plan/evaluate patient care.
• Ability to work overtime in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital; may involve 16-hour shifts when needed.
• Complete annual competency training including TOVA III with restraints and BLS.

Job Duties

Western State Hospital is recruiting internally for RN-II Shift Supervisor (Formerly RNCB) to provide quality nursing care and a safe therapeutic environment for a specific patient population, utilizing knowledge base and experience through the nursing process. This recruitment is for the below units and shifts:

• 2 Elm 1st/2nd
• 2 Pine 1st/2nd
• 2 Hickory 1st/2nd

RN-II Shift Supervisor will provide direct patient care in a safe, therapeutic environment for a specific patient population in a 24-hour 7 day a week psychiatric hospital that conforms to care and treatment policies and procedures and demonstrates knowledge of population specific needs and competencies.

• Providing quality care as a part of an interdisciplinary team
• Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
• Creating healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
• Observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional wellbeing, and other situations
• Documenting and communicating
• Using specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery

The Nursing Department provides 24-hour direct care services to psychiatric patients. The goal of care is to facilitate discharge to a less restrictive setting by assisting patients to improve and/or maintain their physical, mental and social functioning. This nursing care goal is achieved in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have a Current RN license that is eligible to be utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Must be a current WSH Employee for at least one year (waived to 6 months with current RNC's recommendation.)
• Must currently hold a minimum of a RN II position.
• Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff. Effective communication (written, verbal and sign).
• Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
• Ability to work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24-hour 7 day per week psychiatric hospital which at times may mean working a 16-hour shift if and when necessary.
• Complete all annual competency training to include TOVA III with physical restraints.
• Complete and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association.
• Demonstrates knowledge of recovery/trauma informed care.

Additional Considerations

Bachelor's and Masters Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or higher education.

Psych Nursing Experience Preferred

• Veteran or Spouse of Veteran
