Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking a PRN Registered Nurse for the 20-bed Pulmonary PCU. The role involves high-acuity care with monitoring, evidence-based practice, and close collaboration with the care team in a Magnet-designated environment.

Responsibilities include age-appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care; documentation in EMR; and ongoing patient and family education.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program.
• Current Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligibility to obtain licensure.
• AHA BLS-HCP required; ACLS/PALS/NRP may be required based on assigned work area.
• Keyboarding skills and computer literacy; experience with electronic medical records.

• Provide individualized patient care across ages and care settings.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care; develop and adjust care plans.
• Document care in the EMR and administer treatments/medications.
• Collaborate with patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure safe outcomes.

How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:

20-bed progressive care unit caring primarily for medical patients, with a frequent—but not exclusive—focus on pulmonary and respiratory conditions. Nurses provide high-acuity care through advanced monitoring, sound clinical judgment, and close collaboration with the care team.

The RN provides professional nursing care to patients across all age groups, supporting patient-centered care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. This role collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality patient outcomes.

The RN

• Provides individualized patient care and coordinates care delivery for patients of all ages.
• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Completes and documents age‑specific assessments to support development of care plans.
• Collaborates with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to develop and adjust care plans.
• Administers treatments and medications accurately and documents care in electronic medical records.
• Identifies and addresses patient and family education needs.
• Participates in performance improvement and quality initiatives.
• Advocates for patients and supports their rights and psychosocial needs.
• Applies knowledge of growth and development to provide age‑appropriate care.
• Demonstrates clinical expertise in dynamic and changing care environments.
• Implements strategies to improve patient outcomes and resource utilization.
• Serves as a role model and supports development of peers and team members.
• Manages resources, prioritizes tasks, and adapts to changing patient care needs.
• Supports orientation and training of new employees.
• Uses problem‑solving skills to address patient care and operational challenges.
• Provides feedback and participates in shared decision‑making activities.
• Supports education activities within the department.
• Maintains confidentiality and complies with regulatory and organizational standards.

What We Require:

Education: Graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program required.

Experience: None.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Current Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia required or eligibility to obtain licensure required.

Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required. Additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or NRP may be required based on assigned work area.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Keyboarding skills and computer literacy required, including use of electronic medical records. For Behavioral Health roles, must demonstrate ability to safely manage disruptive or potentially violent patients.

Compensation Range:

$33.52 - $50.28

Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
