Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) on nights. The RN provides immediate post‑operative care, monitors airway and vitals, and collaborates closely with anesthesia and surgical teams to ensure safe recovery and discharge readiness.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.
• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
• AHA BLS‑HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
• Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

Responsibilities

• Provide immediate post‑operative care in the PACU, including airway patency, respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring, pain assessment, and incision site care.
• Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe patient recovery and readiness for discharge or transfer.
• Educate patients and families about post‑operative expectations and care, and document care plans in the EMR.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care across ages; manage resources and participate in patient throughput and quality improvement.

As part of the health care team, RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and the provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. The registered nurse utilizes delegation and critical‑thinking skills to provide quality service through a team‑oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.

Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Responsibilities

In the PACU setting, the RN is responsible for the immediate post‑operative care of patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical or procedural interventions. Duties include continuous assessment and monitoring of airway patency, respiratory and cardiovascular status, level of consciousness, pain, and surgical sites. The PACU RN collaborates closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe patient recovery, readiness for discharge or transfer, and effective patient and family education regarding post‑operative expectations and care. This position primarily works three 12‑hour shifts per week, most commonly from 0800–2030 or 0900–2130. Occasional shifts from 0645–1915 may be required based on unit needs. Weekend coverage may be necessary on a limited basis to support Baylor staff coverage; this is infrequent but may occur. Schedule flexibility is essential to ensure safe patient throughput and continuity of care in the PACU.

The RN Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area. Age specific admission and ongoing assessments are completed, documented and used to develop a plan of care. Collaborates with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care. Revises plan according to changes in patient status. Treatments and medications for patients of all ages are accurately administered and documented utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Patient/family (caregiver) educational needs are identified in a timely manner, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented and documented appropriately. Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities. Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support. Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served. Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement. Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances. Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes. Functions as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians. Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs. Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre‑established guidelines. Uses problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area. Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees. Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation. Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making. Assists with providing education activities for unit/department.

What We Require

Compensation Range

$33.52 - $50.28 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
