Job summary

Summa Health System – Akron Campus is seeking an RN for the 6W Acute Care for the Elderly unit. The role is full-time, 36 hours per week, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM, with every other weekend and holiday coverage.

The unit is a 28-bed geriatric-focused inpatient service with a patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:5 to 1:6 and includes a $5/hr night shift differential and $1/hr weekend differential.

Qualifications

• ADN required; BSN preferred.
• Current license to practice Registered Nursing in Ohio.
• ACLS certification within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide, coordinate and delegate nursing care for geriatric inpatients.
• Maintain patient safety, observe and facilitate testing and observation.
• Adhere to unit policies and participate in residency program if applicable.

Primary patient population: This unit primarily provides care to geriatric patients who require inpatient acute care needs or need close observation and testing.

Unit Size: 28-bed unit

Target Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5 to 1:6 *subject to change based on census numbers and patient care needs

Summary

Guided by knowledge of the basic principles of nursing based on the biological, physical, and psycho-social sciences, utilizes judgment supported by evidence and nursing theory in the delivery of nursing care. Provides, coordinates and/or delegates nursing care and manages resources in the delivery of care for patients, the family of patients and the community, with the goal of attaining, maintaining and restoring optimum health.

Formal Education Required

• Associate’s degree in Nursing (ADN) required, BSN preferred
• Graduate of a program of professional nursing that is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)
• Current license to practice registered nursing in the State of Ohio

Experience And Training Required

• PRN RN’s must have at least one-year recent experience in the area of practice.
• One year of related RN experience is required for weekend option positions.
• Additional related previous experience and/or preparation may be required for specialty units.

Other Skills, Competencies And Qualifications

• Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
• Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
• Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
• Requires exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment, such as risk of falls, strains, etc.
• Maintains current Basic Life Support certification; All nurses new to critical care, progressive care, medical telemetry, PACU, and ED must successfully complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support within the first six months and maintain current card. Experienced RNs hired into areas requiring ACLS are expected to have an ACLS certification upon hire or must be completed within six weeks of hire.
