Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is recruiting an RN for the Inpatient Med/Surg Float Pool. The role covers cross-trained staffing across 30+ inpatient units, including med/surg, oncology, telemetry, and rehabilitation, in a fast-paced hospital setting at Clements University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion.

The position emphasizes flexible staffing, patient safety, and teamwork with leadership and central staffing to sustain high-quality care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program.
  • 1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience.
  • Current Texas RN license, or NLC license, upon hire.
  • BLS certification, ACLS certification, NIHSS certification, CPI certification upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments across patient populations.
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan of care based on assessments.
  • Coordinates with interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, timely patient care.
  • Prioritizes interventions and reports changes in condition to the care team.
  • Documents education provided to patient and family and confirms understanding.
  • Supports orientation and mentorship of new staff and unlicensed personnel where applicable.

JOB SUMMARY

Join UT Southwestern as a Registered Nurse (RN) on our Inpatient Med/Surg Float Pool team and help with our commitment to enhance patient care and comfort. The Inpatient Float Pool is a high-impact, system-level nursing team that ensures safe, responsive, and flexible staffing across both Clements University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion. Float Pool RNs are cross-trained to support more than 30 inpatient units-including multiple areas, med/surg, oncology, telemetry, progressive care, rehabilitation, and complex specialty services-adapting in real time to fluctuations in census, acuity, and staffing demands. More than a coverage model, the Float Pool is a strategic clinical resource that partners with inpatient leadership, Central Staffing, and Hospital Administration to sustain safe care delivery and support hospital-wide operations.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
REQUIRED
  • Education
    Graduate of accredited nursing program

  • Experience
    1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience

  • Licenses and Certifications
    (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and

JOB DUTIES
  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes all assessments into consideration age specific criteria.
  • Anticipates patient's and/or patient's family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessment. Completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Confers with all members of health care team in collaborative, fashion, sharing information and observations of patient and/or patient's family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon completed assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action.
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care.
  • Adheres to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering nursing care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research.
  • Provides answers and/or education to patient and/or patient's family. Completes documentation of all education provided. Obtains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and/or family. Demonstrates effective communication with children. Con- tributes to patient and/or family verbal comfort with after discharge care.
  • Welcomes and orients patient and/or family to unit. Encourages patient and family participation in care. Reviews plan of care with patient and family every shift. Explains special diets, tests, procedures and medications in easily understood language. Makes frequent rounds on patients, and communicates when will return.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions in workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify error. Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to environment. Delegates duties appropriately and within legal parameters.
  • Serves as advocate to patient and/or family. Responds to patient's and or patient's family's complaints. Reports complaints to Clinical Nurse Manager or their designee. Utilizes chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work related problems.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
