Job summary

MercyOne Waterloo Endocrinology Care is seeking an RN Educator to provide diabetes education and counseling to patients at Waterloo Medical Center. You will help develop services and align with MercyOne's mission to deliver personalized, expert care.

As part of MercyOne Health System, you’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, support patient education across maternal-child nursing, and help maintain high-quality educational materials while ensuring compassionate, patient-centered care

Qualifications

• Nursing degree with eligible RN licensure in Iowa.
• Experience in maternal-child nursing and patient education.
• Diabetes education or endocrinology experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provides assessment, teaching and follow-up instruction to program participants in individual and group settings.
• Receives referrals from patient, physician or patient care staff.
• Develops plan of care based on identified concerns or problems.
• Coordinates/provides follow-up services in person or via phone.
• Documents education provided for inpatients on patient medical record.
• Reviews and updates educational materials/curriculum.

MercyOne provides personalized, expert care for patients with complex conditions related to hormones and glands. If any part of your endocrine system isn't working properly, you might feel unwell. Your primary care provider may refer you to a MercyOne specialist so we can get you back to living your best life.

Diabetes may be the best-known endocrine condition. MercyOne brings together diabetes educators, dietitians and nurses to provide supportive, convenient care for patients with diabetes. However, there's more to endocrine care at MercyOne than diabetes.

As a RN Educator at MercyOne, you provide diabetes education and counseling to clients at Waterloo Medical Center as appropriate. Assists with the development of services. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne

Schedule

• Full time 40 hours
• Office Hours 8:30-5:00
• No weekends or Holidays

General Requirements

• Provides assessment, teaching and follow-up instruction to program participants in individual and group
• settings.
• Receives referrals from patient, physician or patient care staff.
• Receives and returns calls from clients to provide educational assistance and emotional support.
• Selects and demonstrates procedures, techniques and devices.
• Conducts initial needs assessment.
• Develops plan of care based on identified concerns or problems.
• Coordinates/provides follow-up services in person or via phone.
• Communicates patient status.
• Communicates with physician regarding education provided, follow-up plan and next physician visit.
• Documents education provided for inpatients on patient medical record.
• Documents extensive client conversations as appropriate.
• Facilitates ongoing development of services.
• Reviews and updates educational materials/curriculum.
• Reviews patient satisfaction data and incorporates learnings to improve services.
• Assists with the formal review of program on an annual basis.
• Functions as referral resource/consultant for other health care professionals and the community.

Education

• Associate Degree: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Bachelors Degree: preferred
• Current Iowa RN license or licensure/certification in field of study. IBCLC certification preferred. BLS.
• Mandatory Reporter
• 0 - 2 years - Minimum of 2 years maternal child nursing experience; patient education experience preferred.
