Job summary

The GEO Group is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive chronic care in a correctional setting. You will perform physical assessments, support physicians with sick calls, and ensure accurate medication administration while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Ideal candidates hold an RN license with 2+ years of relevant experience, and can coordinate chronic disease scheduling alongside LPN staff. This is a full-time, on-site role with benefits.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state.
  • Two years of direct work experience is preferred.
  • Competencies include crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, and nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history for detainees entering the correctional system.
  • Assist physician with sick calls and minor procedures; refer complex cases to physicians.
  • Ensure orders are implemented and medications administered as prescribed.
  • Maintain patient progress notes and document detainee contacts while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling and supervise LPN staff.

Responsibilities

Summary:

The Registered Nurse, Chronic Care initiates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of operational security.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history as required on each detainee/inmate entering the correctional system. Medical problems are referred to the physician for extended evaluation.
  • Assist physician with sick call by screening patients and minor surgical procedures. Treat detainees/inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refers other medical problems to the appropriate physician.
  • Ensure the implementation of physician's orders. Ensure that prescribed medications are administered as ordered using the formulary. Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in dispensing medication.
  • Make observation rounds on patients, and records in progress notes. Evaluate symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients on periodic basis, charts, and reports problems to management.
  • Maintain security while dispensing medications and is continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among detainees/inmates. Maintain non-involvement in the security aspects of care.
  • Destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.
  • Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary.
  • Maintain compliance with industry and company policies for accreditation.
  • Document all detainee/inmate contacts. Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling.
  • Supervise the work flow of the LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) staff. Provide input into performance evaluation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located. Maintains a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.
  • Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
  • Must possess competence in the performance of the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Must have the ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis, and be able provide appropriate follow through treatment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently: Lift or carry and push/pull up to 40 lbs.; walk, stand, sit, bend, stoop and reach above shoulder level.
  • Occasionally: Lift or carry and push/pull up to 60 lbs.; work with machinery and climb.
