UAB Medicine's Pulmonary Intermediate Care Unit is a 30-bed unit delivering high-dependency respiratory care. The unit operates under a unique model: department of three, unit of one, with skilled nursing leadership guiding care during night shifts.

This full-time RN role directs nursing activities, provides professional patient care, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient treatment and smooth unit operations.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Nursing with 18 months of related experience required.
• If job is in a free-standing emergency department (FSED) location, one year of emergency or ICU nursing experience required.
• Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the AHA is required within six (6) months from date of hire to role.
• PALS certification may be required within six (6) months from date of hire to role if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Direct nursing service activities in the assigned care unit for the duration of one shift.
• Provide professional nursing care for patients in the assigned unit.

Job Highlights

The Pulmonary Intermediate Care Unit features a unique “department of three, unit of one” approach to patient care. This 30-bed intermediate and acute care unit treats patients requiring high-dependency and intermediate respiratory care. Our intermediate patients include those with advanced lung disease, BiPap, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, or escalating, high-flow nasal oxygen. Our unit is also home to patients of the state’s only accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center, which provides highly specialized cystic fibrosis care. The Special Care Unit (SCU) partners with UAB Medicine to admit patients directly from critical care units and is only one of only two units in the U.S. designed to wean patients off a ventilator. The staff provide specialized therapy as well as comprehensive rehabilitation, which results in the delivery of industry-leading patient outcomes and shorter recovery times.

Job Description

To work with nursing leadership to direct nursing service activities in the assigned care unit for the duration of one shift and/or in the absence of the Nurse Manager. To provide professional nursing care for patients in assigned care unit. To support nursing leadership in the coordination of patient care, personnel management, physician/interdisciplinary collaboration and general administrative duties.

Qualifications

Associate's degree in Nursing with Eighteen (18) months of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. If job is in a free-standing emergency department (FSED) location, one (1) year of experience must be emergency or ICU nursing experience. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the AHA is required within six (6) months from date of hire to role. Depending on the unit/department, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the AHA, or other comparable certification as appropriate for the age of patients to be treated, may be required within six (6) months from date of hire to role.
