Job summary

Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB), a Munich Re company, invites applications for a Risk Modeling Intern. The program runs part-time beginning January 2027 and transitions to full-time over an 11-week summer period (May–August) at our Hartford, CT office.

You will help assess major events’ impact on insured equipment and portfolios using stochastic models and simulations. You will work with catastrophe and accumulation modeling teams, gain exposure to insurance risk concepts, and have potential

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD candidate in a quantitative field with coursework in probability and risk analysis.
  • Experience or coursework in simulation and stochastic modeling required.
  • Strong programming, data handling, and ability to communicate results to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Support design, development, and evaluation of simulation and stochastic models for equipment breakdown, cyber, and related insurance products.
  • Analyze exposure and loss data, test model assumptions, and communicate results to technical and business audiences.
  • Collaborate with catastrophe and accumulation modeling teams in Hartford, CT, with a hybrid work schedule.

HSB Currently has a Risk Modeling Intern opening for 2027. We are currently recruiting a part-time intern to begin in January 2027, and continue with a full-time schedule for 11 weeks during the summer period (May - August).

As a valued Risk Modeling Intern in our Hartford, CT office, you will work with HSB's catastrophe and accumulation modeling team to help assess how major events could affect insured equipment, businesses, and portfolios. You will support the design, development, and evaluation of simulation and stochastic models relevant to HSB's specialty insurance products, including but not limited to equipment breakdown and cyber coverage. Your work may involve analyzing exposure and loss data, testing model assumptions, and communicating results to technical and business stakeholders.

Desired Major(s) and Level of Education:
  • MS or PhD student in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Coursework or research in probability, stochastic processes, simulation, statistical modeling, or risk analysis is required.
  • Exceptional undergraduate students with substantial quantitative modeling experience will also be considered.
Skills:
  • Strong foundation in probability, statistics, and mathematical modeling.
  • Experience designing and implementing simulations, including Monte Carlo methods, and assessing model assumptions and uncertainty.
  • Programming experience with Python (preferred) or R and working knowledge of SQL, with the ability to write clear, well-documented code.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to communicate technical findings to both technical and business audiences.
  • Experience with data preparation, statistical analysis, model validation, and visualization.
  • Familiarity with actuarial or insurance concepts such as loss frequency and severity, dependence, aggregation, or portfolio risk is a plus.
  • Basic software development skills, including version control with Git, are a plus.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, cyber risk, power grid risk, equipment reliability, or related topics is preferred but not required.
  • Actuarial credentials or substantial exam progress are preferred but not required.
  • Available to start the internship part-time in January 2027 and move to full-time in May 2027 with a hybrid work schedule in the Hartford, CT office.
