Universal Health Services is seeking a Manager of Risk Management to lead our Patient Safety and Risk Management efforts across Inland Valley and Rancho Springs Hospitals in Anaheim? (context shows two CA facilities).

The role focuses on establishing a framework for risk management programs that deliver measurable operational and strategic value, support a Just Culture, and promote exceptional patient-centered care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in a related field.
• 3–5 years of healthcare risk management experience.
• Minimum 3 years of leadership in a related field, acute care experience.
• In-depth knowledge of risk management processes including risk identification, reduction, mitigation, claims management, and contract review.
• Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, Centers for Medicare Conditions of Participation, California acute care regulations, and CDPH functions; plans of correction with regulators preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the Patient Safety and Risk Management Program.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate organizational risks and ensure corrective actions are developed and monitored.
• Coordinate and manage incident reporting; investigate, document, trend, and resolve events in a timely manner.
• Analyze patient safety events, near misses, sentinel events, and adverse occurrences to identify trends and reduce risk.
• Prepare and present risk management and patient safety reports to committees such as Fall Prevention and Medication Safety.
• Serve as a resource to leadership on risk assessment, liability exposure, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Investigate serious incidents and coordinate with corporate risk management and executives for follow-up.
• Coordinate claims management activities and support legal processes as needed.
• Ensure timely reporting of adverse events and regulatory notifications per requirements.
• Assist with accreditation readiness and liaison with accrediting/regulatory agencies.
• Develop corrective action plans and drive sustainable process improvements.
• Collaborate with education and operations to train on safety, compliance, and best practices.
• Promote a safety culture to reduce risk and improve patient care outcomes.
• Maintain current knowledge of healthcare regulations and risk management best practices.

Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Hospital in Wildomar, California is a licensed 122-bed facility accredited by the Joint Commission. It is Southwest Riverside County's only designated Trauma Center and a county-designated Paramedic Base Station. The hospital performs more than 4,000 surgeries a year, and has an average of 4,000 Emergency Department visits per month. The hospital features a Bariatric Weight‑Loss Surgery Center of Excellence and the region’s only Total Joint Center.

Southwest Healthcare Rancho Springs Hospital in Murrieta, California is a 120 bed acute‑care hospital with the region's only Pediatric Emergency Services team (for children 14 and under) provided by board certified Rady Children’s emergency medicine physicians. Rancho Springs Hospital also provides the area's only OB/Emergency Department program, which gives expectant mothers 24/7 on‑site access to OB/GYN physician coverage. The Childbirth Center at Rancho Springs Hospital is the largest in the region and features spacious family‑friendly private suites. Rancho's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is operated by Rady Children’s.

Employee will be required to float between the two facilities (Southwest Health Rancho Springs and Inland Valley Hospitals) based on operational needs, with appropriate orientation and competency validation provided.

Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Risk Management, the Manager of Risk Management is as a key member of the SWHS leadership team and will be responsible for leading our hospitals Patient Safety‑Risk Management Plan. This position will ensure that a framework is established and utilized to lead risk management programs that are proven to deliver tangible operational and strategic business value, supports a Just Culture, and promotes exceptional patient‑centered care.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the Patient Safety and Risk Management Program, including annual review of goals, objectives, and patient safety initiatives.
• Partner with senior leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate organizational risks, ensuring effective corrective action plans are developed and monitored.
• Coordinate and manage the incident reporting process, ensuring events are thoroughly investigated, documented, trended, and resolved in a timely manner.
• Analyze patient safety events, near misses, sentinel events, and adverse occurrences to identify trends and implement risk reduction strategies.
• Prepare and present risk management and patient safety reports to various committees, including Fall Prevention, Pressure Injury Prevention, Medication Safety, and Environment of Care (EOC).
• Serve as a key resource to leadership on risk assessment, liability exposure, patient safety, and regulatory compliance matters.
• Investigate serious incidents and critical events, collaborating with corporate risk management and executive leadership to ensure appropriate follow‑up and resolution.
• Coordinate claims management activities, including gathering documentation, responding to legal requests, maintaining case files, and supporting depositions, mediations, and litigation proceedings.
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting of adverse events, critical incidents, and regulatory notifications in accordance with organizational and corporate requirements.
• Assist with accreditation readiness, regulatory surveys, and compliance activities, serving as a liaison with accrediting and regulatory agencies.
• Support leaders in developing plans of correction and implementing sustainable process improvements to address identified deficiencies.
• Collaborate with education and operational departments to develop and deliver training on patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, and best practices.
• Promote a culture of safety by driving initiatives that reduce risk, improve quality outcomes, and enhance the patient care experience.
• Maintain current knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and risk management best practices to support organizational compliance and continuous improvement.

• Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in healthcare risk management.
• Minimum 3 years leadership experience in related field required, acute care experience.
• In‑depth knowledge of risk management processes including risk identification, risk reduction, mitigation, claims management, and contract review.
• Knowledge of the Joint Commission Standards, Centers of Medicare Conditions of Participation, California acute care regulations, and the functions of the California Department of Public Health. Ability to respond and develop plans of correction/evidence to regulatory agencies preferred.
