Job Description

The Division of Banks is currently accepting applications for the Risk Management Examiner I position in the Depository Institution Supervision – Bank Risk Management Examinations Unit. This role will conduct financial safety and soundness examinations in Massachusetts state‑chartered banks.

About the Division

The Division of Banks maintains public confidence in Massachusetts financial institutions through oversight of state‑chartered banks, credit unions, and other entities. Employees support compliance, consumer protection, and financial literacy education.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in risk management examinations of state‑chartered banks, reviewing financial records and meeting with bank staff.
  • Analyze financial statements, policies, and procedures; interview bank or credit union staff.
  • Assist in the analysis of financial institutions by reviewing documents and reports, performing data analysis, and assessing internal controls and solvency.
  • Analyze quarterly financial condition reports, balance sheets and income statements; determine the impact of loan and investment portfolios on financial condition.
  • Prepare sections of the Examination Report and detailed work papers accurately and timely.
  • Communicate findings with internal and external stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
  • Participate in team examinations, formal and on‑the‑job training.

Union & Salary

The Examiner position is a union role in the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) Unit 6 and is covered by the union contract and benefits. The Division offers a competitive starting salary of $73 000 (Grade 10); salary placement can range up to $84 000 based on experience.

Qualifications
  • At least one year of full‑time professional experience in accounting, auditing, or bank examining work, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in commercial banking or credit unions; accounting, auditing or consulting in the financial services industries.
  • Familiarity with BSA/AML, trust, or information technology.
  • Strong analytical, multi‑tasking, writing, and communication skills.
  • Willing and able to travel throughout Massachusetts and out‑of‑state with partial overnight stays; driver’s license and vehicle recommended.
  • Preferred: academic background in accounting, business administration, banking, finance, economics, or related fields; certifications in banking regulation.
