Risk Division Control Officer Business Risk & Control

The Business Risk & Control (BRC) team is responsible for implementing and overseeing the MUSO Non-Financial Risk (NFR) Framework across all non-financial risk types. BRC provides risk and control coverage for banking, securities, and corporate functions, working closely with business lines to promote an effective control environment.

Control Officer

The First Line Control Officer is part of a centralized first line control team within BRC. The role supports business lines and corporate functions by executing control activities, strengthening governance, and promoting an effective control environment. The Control Officer reports directly to BRC, with an additional reporting line to the relevant corporate function.

Principal Duties
  • Provide first line of defense coverage for the Americas Risk Management (ARM) Division, including Credit, Market, Liquidity, Enterprise, and Non-Financial Risk.
  • Own the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of control-related deliverables and artifacts.
  • Lead and support core control activities, including the annual RCSA process, process mapping, control inventories, internal control testing, risk events, self-identified issues, risk acceptances, remediation tracking, and non-financial risk reporting.
  • Support Internal Audit engagements, including issue tracking, status reporting, and timely remediation.
  • Partner with colleagues to balance non-financial risk requirements with efficient business operations.
Additional Roles and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with process and control owners to design, implement, and assess controls that mitigate non-financial risk.
  • Provide control assurance by identifying risks, documenting associated controls, and evaluating control effectiveness.
  • Serve as liaison to second and third line control teams to support adherence to non-financial risk framework requirements.
  • Advance core risk program requirements, including process mapping, RCSAs, risk reporting, business continuity, fraud, information security, conduct risk, and related enterprise risk programs.
  • Provide operational risk expertise and guidance for new products, key initiatives, and material business changes.
  • Conduct risk assessments to evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of policies, procedures, processes, systems, technology, and internal controls.
  • Report risk assessment findings through non-financial risk governance forums and influence control owners and business sponsors to address control gaps.
  • Maintain regular risk reporting for risk ratings, issues, emerging themes, and key control topics.
  • Communicate risk program updates, risk profiles, policy changes, and key risk information to senior division management.
  • Support non-financial risk regulatory exams, audit reviews, compliance testing, and remediation efforts as a subject matter expert.
  • Coordinate responses to regulator and external audit inquiries, as needed.
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a Risk Control Officer, Internal Auditor, or similar control function within a Corporate and Investment Banking sell-side financial services organization.
  • The candidate should bring strong subject matter expertise in regulatory reporting, financial accounting, and related control disciplines, with a solid understanding of Market Risk, Credit Risk, Non-Financial Risk, and Enterprise Risk.
  • The individual will be embedded within the Risk Division and collaborate closely with the Risk COO.
  • 7+ years of experience in risk control, internal audit, or a similar control function, with strong knowledge of control requirements supporting trading businesses.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • Ability to develop high-quality analysis and actionable management information.
  • Ability to operate independently while maintaining a collaborative approach with team members and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to articulate deadlines, deliverables, and risk matters clearly to senior stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, with demonstrated ability to raise issues, elevate early, and provide credible challenge.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Professional, adaptable, and proactive mindset.
  • Ability to resolve conflict, maintain objectivity, and support sound decision-making.
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently analyze issues, solve problems, and manage risks within business unit risk appetite and applicable risk and compliance program requirements.
  • Awareness of developments in the financial services market and regulatory environment.
  • The expected base salary ranges from $175,000.00 - $200,000.00.
  • Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained.
  • Market and organizational factors are also considered.
  • In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
