Job summary

IDEA Public Schools in Austin, Texas, seeks a Special Education Co-Teacher to support students with significant cognitive and developmental disabilities in a low-ratio setting (1 to 3). The role focuses on a functional curriculum and daily living, with pathways to college and adulthood through practical academics and community integration.

Ideal candidates have 48 college hours and a bachelor’s degree, with preferred experience in special education settings.

Qualifications

• At least 48 college hours required; a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
• Experience working with children with cognitive and/or pervasive developmental disabilities is strongly preferred.
• Willingness to pursue Special Education teaching certification is preferred.
• IDEA Co-Teachers with a bachelor’s degree may enroll in the IDEA Special Education Certification Program (ISECP).

Responsibilities

• Assist in the educational and social development of students under the guidance of the facilitator and teachers.
• Assist with implementing Individual Education Plans and monitor student progress.
• Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom.
• Collaborate with speech therapists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists.
• Maintain student records with classroom teachers.
• Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and help develop social skills.
• Assist with daily living activities in Life Skills units when needed.
• Occasionally accompany students on school bus trips before or after school.
