Job summary

MHI Ship Repair & Services, located in Norfolk, VA, is hiring an experienced Riggers to plan, supervise and execute rigging tasks in a shipyard environment. You will inspect loads, select appropriate gear, and communicate with crane operators to move heavy equipment safely.

The role requires hands-on rigging experience, strong attention to safety, and the ability to work in a busy marine repair facility near the Hampton Roads port.

Qualifications

  • Experience in rigging with attention to safe work methods.
  • Ability to form slings, and install rigging hardware.
  • Knowledge of signaling workers operating cranes.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.
  • Forms slings and towing bridles by looping and crimping cable.
  • Splices and ties rope to form nets, ladders, and other rigging.
  • Installs hooks, swivels, and turnbuckles in rigging.

Salary Range: $28.42 To $34.24 Annually

MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

MHI is hiring experienced Riggers . Depending on skill level, duties may include the following:

  • Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used. Plans, outlines and supervises small rigging tasks.
  • Forms slings and towing bridles by looping and splicing cable or by crimping metal sleeve around cable end and body of cable, using crimping tool.
  • Splices and ties rope to form nets, ladders, and other rigging.
  • Installs hooks, swivels, and turnbuckles in rigging.
  • Reeves lines through blocks and pulleys.
  • Sews canvas or leather covers on rigging at friction points, using sail twine and sail maker's palm and needle.
  • Selects and attaches gear, braces, and cushions, according to weight and distribution of load, availability of hoisting machinery, and presence of obstacles.
  • Signals workers operating cranes or other equipment to move load.
  • Installs beam clamps, pad eyes, gallows frames, and other supporting structures for rigging gear.
  • Controls movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or in confined spaces, using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, and rollers.
  • Installs or repairs ship's rigging such as mast or antenna rigs, small boat handling gear, and winch or windlass rigging.
  • Install masts, booms, yardarms, and gaffs.
  • Rigs and hangs scaffold and stages that require blocks and pulleys.
