Job summary

Holden Forests & Gardens seeks a Conservation Biologist to lead research, conservation, and operations at the Leach Rhododendron Research Station. Build a research program around a globally significant living collection while guiding conservation and breeding.

The role combines scientific research, collection stewardship, and public engagement to advance understanding of rhododendrons and related taxa. Collaboration across HF&G and external partners is essential.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biology, ecology, horticulture, forestry, or related field.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific research and publication.
  • Experience communicating science to professional and/or public audiences.
  • Evidence of professional service and scholarly engagement.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage research projects, including personnel and budget responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated capacity to pursue external funding opportunities.
  • Commitment to collaboration across disciplines and institutions.
  • Appreciation for the role of arboreta, public gardens, museums, and mission-driven organizations in advancing science.
  • Knowledge of rhododendrons or related taxa, or willingness to develop expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and scholarship on rhododendrons and ericaceous plants.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
  • Secure external funding to support research initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Holden Forests & Gardens and external partners.
  • Advise graduate students and supervise station personnel.
  • Provide leadership for the Leach Breeding program integrating research and conservation.
  • Support stewardship and development of collections and outreach to the public.
  • Represent HF&G in professional networks and societies.
