Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) seeks Revenue Officers to collect state debts and enforce tax laws with professionalism. This role emphasizes accurate case management, data security, and taxpayer service while supporting ongoing process improvements.

Ideal candidates will have a related bachelor’s or an associate degree with relevant experience, strong organizational and computer skills, and a readiness to work in a fast-paced government environment.

Qualifications

  • Customer service and data privacy awareness are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect debts due to the state and enforce tax laws professionally.
  • Prioritize accounts in collection status using established criteria.
  • Prepare and submit required reports with guidance.
  • Assist taxpayers via MyDORWAY and processing Business Tax Applications.
  • Inspect Sales, COD, and Admissions licenses as needed.
  • Draft violations to ensure tax compliance; update procedures.

What You Will Do

As a Revenue Officer, you will collect debts due the state and enforce tax laws in a professional manner.

Primary Job Duties Include
  • Collecting/resolving debt and enforcing tax laws in routine cases through research and taxpayer contact/follow-up, with a focus on the security of taxpayer data
  • Assisting in prioritizing accounts in collection status by managing assigned case load and determining urgency using established selection criteria
  • Preparing/submitting required reports, with guidance
  • Assisting in providing taxpayer assistance to include:
    • Providing basic assistance and referring taxpayers to use our free online tax portal (MyDORWAY)
    • Processing Business Tax Applications
    • Filing basic returns (current and delinquent)
    • Adjusting/issuing assessments and liens
  • Assisting in performing inspections of Sales, Coin Operated Device (COD), and Admissions licenses
  • Assisting with writing violations to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations
  • Developing, updating, and reviewing section procedures

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field OR
  • An associate's degree in a business-related field and relevant work experience OR
  • Relevant experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with an approved equivalence by the Division of State Human Resources (DSHR)
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for field work. (Mileage reimbursement provided)

Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning. College transcript required for consideration, where appropriate. Transcripts may be attached to the application or emailed to Employment.SCDOR@dor.sc.gov.

Examples of common business or related degrees include accounting, advertising, criminal justice, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, health care management, hospitality management, human resources, information technology management, marketing, organizational leadership, public relations, taxation, etc.

  • Hours: Flexible hours may be available from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).
  • Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week after one year of employment with SCDOR.

  • Retirement: This position falls under the Police Officers Retirement System

  • Office location: This position is located in Florence, but we also have Revenue Officer opportunities currently available in Columbia, Beaufort, and Rock Hill. If you are interested in another location, you must submit a separate application.
