Job summary

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Compliance Division seeks a Revenue Examiner 1 to join the Individual Tax team. This role supports customers, audits, and tax processing in service of Iowa taxpayers and licensees.

You will perform audits, review returns, and resolve inquiries, with emphasis on accuracy, integrity, and professional communication. Applicants must live in Iowa and will undergo background checks.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent education/experience required.
  • Two years of college or work experience in tax/audit-adjacent areas.
  • Experience in the state executive branch in tax, accounting, or auditing is a plus.

Job description

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Compliance Division is seeking a Revenue Examiner 1 to join our Individual Tax team. The Compliance Division oversees all facets of tax processing, issuances of business permits, and alcohol regulation throughout the state. From the receipt of individual and business tax returns and payments, audits and collections, to routine compliance inspections and regulatory verification of alcohol-licensed establishments, this division is tasked with upholding, enforcing and educating taxpayers and licensees on Iowa’s laws and regulations.

In this position you will:

  • Assist customers with account-level information inquiries over the telephone, in-person and via email regarding tax credits
  • Utilize strong judgment skills to resolve sensitive and difficult situations while using effective communication with both internal and external customers
  • Conduct complex tax audits by independently performing an office investigation to ensure that individuals or businesses are correctly and accurately claiming tax credits
  • Review and examine tax returns, make necessary adjustments through gathering all returns filed by the taxpayer, and determine either the correct amount of refund due or additional amount of taxes, penalty, and interest owed by the taxpayer

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • Experience providing customer service to the public
  • Basic knowledge of preparing, reviewing, or examining tax returns
  • Ability to gather data and create simple spreadsheets

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field.
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.
