Job summary

Copa Health in Mesa, AZ seeks a detail-oriented Certified Behavioral Health Services Medical Coder to ensure documentation integrity, coding accuracy, and billing compliance across behavioral health programs. You will review clinical records, assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes, and stay aligned with AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer requirements.

The role includes educating providers and staff on coding best practices, and participating in audits and compliance activities to support

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; degree preferred in health information/related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional medical coding in behavioral health or integrated care.
  • Current medical coding certification (CPC, CCS, COC or equivalent).
  • Completion of Behavioral Health coding certification course or specialty training.
  • Demonstrated expertise with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS in behavioral health settings.
  • Strong knowledge of AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS and payer rules.

Responsibilities

  • Review, abstract, and code behavioral health and integrated care documentation using ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS.
  • Assign accurate diagnoses and procedures in line with payer guidelines.
  • Serve as SME on behavioral health coding, documentation standards, and billing compliance.
  • Provide guidance and education to providers and staff on coding best practices.
  • Apply complex coding regulations and payer requirements in daily work.
  • Support coding audits, documentation reviews, and compliance monitoring.

Who We're looking for

Copa Health is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Certified Behavioral Health Services Medical Coder to support coding accuracy, documentation integrity, billing compliance, and staff education across behavioral health programs and services. This position is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and assigning accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for behavioral health and integrated care services in accordance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, abstract, and code behavioral health, psychiatric, counseling, crisis intervention, and integrated care service documentation using current ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards.
  • Assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes in compliance with AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific guidelines.
  • Serve as an internal resource and subject matter expert regarding behavioral health coding, documentation standards, and billing compliance.
  • Provide guidance and education to providers, clinicians, and administrative staff regarding coding best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Advanced understanding of behavioral health terminology, psychiatric documentation, integrated care services, and behavioral health coding guidelines.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex coding regulations, payer requirements, and compliance standards specific to behavioral health services.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional medical coding experience in behavioral health, mental health, psychiatric services, or integrated healthcare settings.
  • Current medical coding certification required, such as CPC, CCS, COC, or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Behavioral Health Coding certification course, specialty training program, or documented specialization in behavioral health/psychiatric coding is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise using ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding systems within behavioral health settings.
  • Strong working knowledge of AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific behavioral health billing requirements.
  • Experience conducting coding audits, documentation reviews, and compliance monitoring activities preferred.
  • Prior experience presenting trainings, facilitating workshops, or leading staff education sessions strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, Microsoft Office applications, and coding/billing software.
