Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking an engineering technology intern/co-op to support relay systems work in power plant environments. You will observe and assist with relays, protective schemes, controls, alarms, and SCADA while learning print reading and safety procedures.

You will engage in hands-on tasks, develop troubleshooting skills, and collaborate with Journeymen and Apprentice Relay Technicians, with travel as needed. DOE safety and professional growth are emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a two- or four-year degree in Engineering Technology or related major.
  • Duke Energy intern/co-op experience.
  • Must be 18 or older at start date.
  • GPA minimum 2.75; 3.0+ preferred.
  • Must not graduate before August 2026.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug test.
  • Possible need for unescorted access/security clearance depending on location.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds; work at heights and from suspended platforms.
  • Ability to work at all power plant areas; US work authorization without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Develop understanding of relaying fundamentals, protective schemes, controls, alarms, SCADA, and communications.
  • Develop basic isolation procedure writing skills.
  • Learn to utilize print reading and the red mark process.
  • Understand RTS and its use in operations.
  • Learn about NERC compliance and the importance of accurate data and timely completion.
  • Develop basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Collaborate with Journeymen and Apprentice-level Relay Technicians.
  • Perform technical and safety-focused work in relay construction and maintenance.
  • Work at company facilities in power plant areas with exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Work at heights and from suspended work platforms; travel as required.

Job description

  • Develop understanding of the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, and communications
  • Develop basic isolation procedure writing skills
  • Learn to utilize print reading and the red mark process
  • Develop understanding of RTS and its use
  • Develop understanding of NERC compliance and the importance of accurate data and timely completion
  • Develop basic troubleshooting skills
  • Develop the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order
  • Develop basic understanding of CT and VT circuits
  • Work alongside Journeymen and Apprentice‑level Relay Technicians
  • Perform technical and safety‑focused work in relay construction and maintenance
  • Work at company facilities in power plant areas, including exposure to mechanical, electrical, noisy, and other hazards
  • Work at heights and from suspended work platforms; travel as required
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in and pursuing a two- or four-year degree in Engineering Technology or a related major
  • Duke Energy intern/co-op experience
  • At least 18 years of age before beginning employment with Duke Energy
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
  • Must not graduate prior to August 2026
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test
  • May need to meet requirements for unescorted access/security clearance, depending on work location
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to work at heights and from suspended work platforms
  • Ability to work in all areas of the power plant
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Desired: cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Desired: completion of 12 credit hours in Introduction to Electrical Utilities, Electrical Utility Print Reading, Physics/Trig for Relay Technicians, and Introduction to CAD
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision‑making
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, plan, and execute assigned work
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with computers, software, and engineering applications
  • Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry
