Job summary

Goodwill is seeking a Retail Store Manager Trainee in Tallahassee to gain hands-on experience in store operations, merchandising, and staff support. You will work under an Area Manager to learn how to run a retail location and drive sales in line with Goodwill’s policies.

The role emphasizes safety, loss control, and people management, with opportunities to oversee a team and develop daily scheduling within labor budgets. Training at various sites may be required.

Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience for at least one year.
  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • Some college preferred; 4-6 years of related training or experience in lieu of degree.

Responsibilities

  • Operations: meet or exceed weekly sales and production quotas.
  • Open, operate and close designated retail sites.
  • Sort and display donated merchandise, rotate dated items.
  • Assist customers, resolve issues and provide master customer service.
  • Process sales, credits, refunds; report maintenance issues.
  • Maintain store cleanliness; prepare sales reports and deposits.
  • Learn store policies, procedures and goals.
  • Learn safety, security and loss control in retail.
  • Learn management responsibilities and assist in Store Manager coverage.
  • Create daily/weekly schedules within labor budget; manage tasks.
  • Follow SCOFFF system and train staff on its value.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed and staff trainings occur.
  • Report accidents/injuries and safety concerns.
  • Maintain employee records and comply with policies.

Description

Work Location: 6810 Thomasville Rd Tallahassee, Fl 32312 will also be required to train at other Goodwill locations as needed.
Primary Functions:

The Retail Store Manager Trainee is designed to prepare individuals for managing a retail location. Under the direct supervision of the Area Manager, the trainee gains hands‑on experience in store operations, including processing, merchandising, sales, inventory control, and staff support. The role focuses on building the skills needed to successfully manage a store in alignment with Goodwill’s policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Operations: Gain an understanding to perform all procedures necessary to meet or exceed the weekly sales and production quota for the store
  • Open, operate and/or close designated retail and/ADC sites
  • Become competent in the sorting and selection of all donated merchandise, display merchandise in an eye‑catching and pleasing manner and assure that dated merchandise is removed on a scheduled rotation system.
  • Verify which necessary items are needed to ship surplus items to other retail stores in need of donations Master word‑class customer service by assisting customers in locating and purchasing goods, resolving customer issues, etc.
  • Process customer sales, credits, refunds, etc. Report facility maintenance issues
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the store Prepare sales reports and deposits
  • Trainee Learning Points:Gain knowledge of overall store policies, procedures and goals
  • Develop a clear understanding of safety, security and loss control issues in a retail environment
  • Gain knowledge of management responsibilities and ability to “fill in” as needed for the Store Manager Develop good working relationship with store personnel and be able to oversee tasks assigned and/or delegated to personnel
  • Proficiency in create daily and weekly work schedules and assignments to maintain effective operations within the labor budget
  • Follow the SCOFFF system and assist in training employees in the value of the SCOFFF system
  • Ensure that all applicable safety procedures are followed consistently, and that staff receive regular safety trainings;
  • Report accidents/injuries and safety concerns to the appropriate safety staff

Requirements:

Physical Requirements:

While performing this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, push, pull, crouch or crawl, talk and hear. Most activities involve repetitive upper body movement and bending. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (unless otherwise restricted) Must have good hand-eye coordination. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

Typical Work Environment:

While performing this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time, but works primarily indoors and/or at facility entrance; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate While performing this job, the employee may be exposed to some hazardous waste dust and dirt Will possibly be working alongside and/or managing others with social, mental, and emotional disabilities
