Job summary

Hy-Vee Inc. invites applications for a Retail Pharmacy Intern. Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, you will fill prescriptions and provide prompt, friendly customer service in a fast‑paced retail setting.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy and registered with the State Pharmacy Board as an intern; six months or less of related experience is acceptable. You will support inventory control, training, and compliance with HIPAA and regulatory standards.

Job Description

Retail Pharmacy Intern – Department: Pharmacy. FLSA: Non‑Exempt. Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. Fills prescriptions in accordance with state and federal statutes under supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fills and helps process prescriptions
  • Provides prompt and efficient service
  • Assists with inventory control, maintaining inventory levels by ordering and stocking merchandise, checking invoices, and entering inventory information into the computer
  • Works with co‑workers as a team to ensure strict adherence to standard operating procedures and facility policies
  • Prepares prescriptions
  • Reports any medication errors to appropriate personnel
  • Prepares and affixes labels to prescription containers
  • Assists in training employees
  • Assists with monthly inventory
  • Follows security and regulatory procedures including Quality Assurance Programs
  • Maintains cleanliness of pharmacy and dispensing area
  • Maintains a professional appearance
  • Adheres to company policies
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed
  • Performs other job‑related duties and special projects as required
Education and Experience

Six months or less of similar or related work experience. Enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy and registered with the State Pharmacy Board as an intern.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
  • Logical or scientific thinking to solve problems involving abstract and concrete variables
  • Ability to compose original correspondence, follow technical manuals, and evaluate technical data
  • Capability to conduct arithmetic calculations including algebraic and geometric calculations
  • Physical exertion up to 50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, negligible in constant action
  • Visual clarity at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet, and field of vision
Physical Requirements

Fingering, grasping, feeling, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, lifting, stooping, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to noise daily; fast work pace in a retail store setting; must handle multiple tasks (enrolling scripts, answering telephone, waiting on customers, etc.) every day; occasional exposure to dangerous chemicals/solvents.

Financial Responsibility

Responsible for company assets including prescription inventory, third‑party accounts receivable, pharmacy computer and software, and pharmacy fixtures.

Contacts

Daily contact with pharmacy operations support staff and customers. Occasional contact with general public, suppliers/vendors, community or trade/professional organizations, and federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies.

Confidentiality

Maintains confidentiality of customers’ private medical information according to HIPAA and of prescription drug pricing and costs.
