Job summary

Bass Pro Shops is seeking a Retail Manager – Hardlines to lead all Hardlines departments and daily store operations. You will drive sales, maintain visual standards, coach outfitters, and ensure compliance with firearms regulations while delivering world-class customer service.

Responsibilities include staffing, inventory management, pricing, promotions, and ensuring safety and policy adherence across Hunting, Firearms, Archery, Fishing, Camping, and Marine.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Retail Manager – Hardlines is responsible for overseeing all Hardlines area within the store. This role oversees the daily operations and sales for assigned departments. Ensures excellent customer service, strong sales performance, effective staff management, and well-maintained merchandise displays while meeting company goals and standards. Provides leadership to store’s overall business in order to achieve customer experience, employee engagement and profitability goals. Creates a workforce that is inspired to service our customers and has passion in the outdoor industry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Department Leadership - Manage daily operations of assigned Hardlines departments; Hunting, Firearms, Archery, Fishing, Camping, and Marine. Achieve sales and profitability goals while ensuring compliance with company policies and operational standards.
  • Merchandise & Visual Presentation - Maintain high standards for visual presentation, including displays, end caps and drive aisles. Coordinate seasonal and promotional setups to maximize customer engagement and drive sales. Maintain planograms as set by the corporate office. Manage monthly store owned product end caps to include product selection, visual presentation, and sales performance. Ensure security sensors and product displays follow Asset Protection guidelines. Ensure departments are clean, organized, and staffed appropriately.
  • Operational Excellence - Ensures compliance with Company policies and procedures. Monitors and assists in completion of monthly Operational Store Walks. Analyze sales reports and develop action plans to improve results. Oversee compliance with credit card, safety standards and loss prevention measures. Ensure accurate scheduling of outfitters and proper floor coverage. Maintain a visible presence on the sales floor to assist customers, coach outfitters, and monitor service standards. Manage daily store operations, including opening, closing, and serving as Manager on Floor.
  • Firearms Compliance - Leads firearm compliance sales standards to ensure compliance with ATF, state, local laws, company policies and procedures, including 4473, 3310, state and internally required firearm forms. Manages firearm safe handling, safety, operations, and customer experience standards including line management and queuing within the firearms department.
  • Firearms Operations - Ensures all firearms operations related tasks are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with all policies, procedures, and regulations. Partners with the General Manager and Gun Vault Specialist Team to ensure compliance standards are maintained at all times. Certify team shadowing and reinforcement of compliance standards through continual, coaching and mentoring on the sales floor.
  • Sales & Store Performance – Drive store profitability by growing sales and managing expenses including payroll, shrink and other controllable expenses. Ensures effective service levels, merchandise presentation, signage, in-stock and inventory levels, knows and assesses the competition, analyzes local economic trends, and leverages customer insights and feedback to drive the business. Drives sales growth in core businesses by leaning into key seasons, events and weekends. Develops and implements plans to correct any deficiencies in financial performance within the department and work with cross‑functional partners where needed to help drive results.
  • Customer Experience - Support and model a strong commitment to world-class customer service. Train outfitters on product knowledge, merchandising and presentation, operational processes and customer engagement expectations. Promote loyalty and in-store services (e.g., CLUB Credit and Rewards, Customer Service Surveys, In-Store Pickup, Mobile Orders, Gear Guard) to enhance customer value. Implement strategies to increase conversion rates and average transaction value. Ensure proper outfitter coverage based upon sales trends and customer needs. Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally. Champions company initiatives to drive in store customer experience and online sales.
  • Inventory & Pricing Management – Adherence to inventory management system guidelines. Ensure proper and timely product replenishment from the backroom. Maintain system inventory locations and quantity stock levels on the sales floor and backroom for proper replenishment. Ensure completion of weekly cycle counts, out of stock scans and display integrity scans. Monitor inventory levels, accuracy and assortment needs for all Hardlines categories. Execute timely price changes and ensure proper ticketing, signage, and promotional tags throughout the department. Ensure all sales events, ad sets, and related tasks are executed efficiently.
  • Team Development & Performance Management - Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable laws, to include interviewing, hiring & training, planning, assigning and directing work; measuring and evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining outfitters; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Drive individual and team performance to achieve sales, service and operational goals. Offer daily direction, coaching, and feedback to improve skillset and competencies of entire team. Consistently monitor performance and take action to improve outcomes.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of retail management experience, in Hunting, Firearms, Fishing, Camping, Marine or multi‑department Hardlines environments.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Strong understanding of retail operations and sales principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven ability to drive sales and manage operational processes.
  • Proficiency in inventory control and visual merchandising standards.
  • Knowledgeable with end-user experience in Hunting, Archery, Fishing, Camping, Marine, Firearms and ATF Compliance Regulations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical ability to handle merchandise and perform store setup tasks as needed.

  • Regularly performs computer work, walks, and stands.
