Job Summary
The Retail Sales Associate is responsible for assisting customers at the retail unit, including merchandising, customer service, and cash handling.
Essential Functions
- Smile and greet customers entering the unit.
- Answer customers’ questions and provide information on products, promotions, and policies.
- Thank each customer and describe merchandise, including use, operation, and care.
- Recommend, select, and help customers locate or obtain merchandise based on needs and desires.
- Compute sales prices, total purchases, and receive and process cash or credit payments.
- Issue receipts, refunds, credit, or change accurately.
- Maintain cash register contents and a clean, orderly cash station area.
- Stock and maintain the sales area with supplies and products.
- Keep the retail operation neat and clean.
- Turn in cash drawer and perform sales reconciliation at shift end.
- Assist with special events.
- Maintain awareness of safety issues and report them immediately to the manager.
Skill & Knowledge Requirements
- Partial High School education; High School Diploma/G.E.D. preferred.
- Mathematical skills.
- Knowledge of Washington, DC’s landmarks, monuments, and memorials preferred.
- Excellent sanitation habits.
- Professional appearance.
- Ability to communicate and attend to guests with the highest standard of service.
- Ability to pass cash handling training.
- Problem sensitivity and ability to recognize and communicate problems to management.
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Move about on foot to accomplish tasks, especially frequent movements within the unit.
- Bend, lift, carry, and reach/extend arms above shoulder height frequently.
- Lifting, carrying, and pushing up to 10 lbs. regularly, 10‑15 lbs. frequently, and up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
- Withstand temperature extremes in indoor/outdoor environments.
- Read and write work‑related documents in English.
- Understand and speak clearly in English to customers and coworkers.
- Communicate verbally with other employees in a fast‑paced environment.
- Physically attend in unit to perform duties and stand for the entire workday.
Equipment Used
Knowledge of the cash register/computer used in the unit.
