Job summary

WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital is seeking a Nursing Assistant to provide direct patient care under the supervision of Physical Therapists. You will support restorative mobility and patient care activities as part of an integrated care team.

The role requires a CNA certification and BLS, with preferred experience in restorative nursing and acute/post-acute care settings. You will document in patient charts and maintain high patient-service standards in a busy clinical environment.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current CNA certification issued by the state.
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Preferred: RN or LPN program enrollment.
  • Prior restorative nursing aide experience and prior patient care in acute/post-acute settings.
  • Phlebotomy experience and glucometer use.

Responsibilities

  • Performs direct patient assignments under supervision of the Physical Therapist.
  • Reports observations and concerns to the Physical Therapist.
  • Assists patients with restorative/maintenance mobility programs.
  • Documents in patient charts per policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates competency in clinical and technical skills daily.
  • Provides high level of customer service per hospital standards.
  • Assists with admission tasks as directed by the RN.

Job description

  • Glucometer use

Provides direct patient care under the direct supervision of the PT and PTA, conducts maintenance programs as outlined by staff physical therapists. Identifies and meets the patient's needs in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant Certification issued by state where services are provided.
WV – Nurse Aide through WV DHHR Nurses Aide Registry
  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 30 days of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • Current enrollment in an RN or LPN program
Experience
  • Prior experience as a restorative nursing aide.
  • Prior patient care experience in an acute care hospital and/or post-acute (skilled nursing, rehab hospital, or home health) setting
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Glucometer use
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs direct patient assignments, applying good judgement and knowledge of skills required within the realm of the job responsibility.
  • Reports all pertinent observations and concerns directly to the Physical Therapist.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist patients with a restorative/maintenance mobility program as outlined by staff physical therapists.
  • Documents on appropriate areas of the patient chart as per policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates competency in clinical and technical skills, completes skills check list, and performs these skills daily as required.
  • Provides a high level of customer service in accordance with established hospital customer service standards.
  • Assists with admission of the patient (i.e. completion of the appropriate areas of admission forms, initial vital signs, orientation to room and unit, etc.) as directed by the RN.
For Facilities With Specialty Accreditation Requirements
  • Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling are necessary body movements utilized in performing job duties throughout the work shift.
  • Must be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights, with varying amounts of assistance in a fair manner on a regular and recurring basis.
  • Accommodated hearing must be within normal range
  • Accommodated vision acuity must be within normal range
  • Must be able to exert forces up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 25 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. constantly. The physical demand classification for this position is medium-heavy, and is in excess of demands for light duty work.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Exposure to body fluids, human tissue, contagious diseases, sharps, and explosive gases.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.
  • Exposure to fumes and odors
  • Exposure to high stress environment
  • Exposure to electrical current
  • Exposure to radiation from x-rays.
Skills And Abilities
  • Able to take and read manual blood pressure.
  • Able to critically think
  • Able to assist patients using proper technique for transfers, gait, and basic ROM/functional exercises.
  • Able to perform basic computer skills
  • Able to take direction.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and written with nurses and therapists.
  • Able to self-initiate work in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to accurately attain and report vital signs
  • Able to identify basic signs of distress and report to nursing.
  • Able to properly fit and apply ambulation/mobility devices splints, slings, and orthoses/prostheses
  • Able and willing to complete on the job training, in-service education, and be able to carry out specific job duties under the supervision of a registered nurse.
