Job summary

ThedaCare Medical Center - Shawano in Wisconsin is seeking a Respiratory Therapy Extern who will work directly under a Licensed Respiratory Therapist to assist with stabilizing and remedying patient respiratory problems across care areas.

You will help maintain equipment, participate in department processes, and grow through supervised patient care while developing critical thinking, communication, and professional skills in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a respiratory program with one clinical rotation completed.
• BLS/CPR certification for healthcare providers.
• Ability to move, lift up to 50 pounds, in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the care of patients with respiratory problems under supervision of a Licensed Respiratory Therapist.
• Applies critical thinking to triage and prioritize patients.
• Communicates effectively with patients, family, physicians and team members.
• Maintains respiratory therapy equipment following safety procedures.
• Supports department processes and professional growth.

Summary :

The Respiratory Therapy Extern works directly under the general supervision fo a Licensed Respiratory Thearpist and assists with stabilizing, preventing and remedying patient respiratory problems in all patient care areas. In addition to supervised patient care, the Respiratory Therapy Extern will assume responsibility for the maintence of a variety fo respiratory therapy equipment and assist Respiratory Therapy team members with departmental processes as needed.

Key Accountabilities

• Assists in the care of patient with respiratory problems in all areas of patient care under the supervison of a Licensed Respiratory Therapist
• Applies critical thinking skills and ensures order accuracy when triaging and prioritizing patients
• Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, family, physicians and other team members
• Responsible for proper respiratory therapy equipiment assembly following safety procedures and routine maintence
• Takes responsibility for professional growth and development

Qualifications

• Education: Currently enrolled in a qualified Respiratory program with one clinical rotation completed
• Certifications: American Heart Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification for health care providers

Physical Demands

• Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds without assistance
• Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

Work Environment

• Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Occasional high noise level in work environment.
• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.
• Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients.
