Northwell Health in New York is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to perform independent assessments and therapy as prescribed, educate patients and families, and prepare and maintain respiratory care equipment.

The role requires an Associate’s degree and an NYS license, a certificate from an accredited RT program, and at least one year of clinical experience preferred. The position is full-time and on-site at a New York facility.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in respiratory therapy is required.
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited respiratory therapy program is required.
  • Current NYS Respiratory Therapist license is required.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews data in the patient record including history, lab data, radiological studies, progress notes, respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring data.
  • Documents/records respiratory therapy data and communicates results to the health care team.
  • Assesses patient’s cardiopulmonary status using observation, tests, and interviews.
  • Performs bedside procedures such as pulse oximetry, ABG analysis, Co-oximetry, venous sampling, and hemodynamic assessments.
  • Monitors mechanical ventilation and adjusts settings as needed to achieve adequate ventilation.
  • Explains planned therapy to patients and evaluates their response, documenting outcomes.
  • Performs blood gas sampling including arterial punctures and arterial line sampling.
  • Assists in airway management and extubation decisions as clinically indicated.

Job Responsibility
  • Reviews data in the patient record including history, lab data, radiological studies, progress notes, respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring data.
  • Documents / records respiratory therapy data as required Communicates data to appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Assesses patient’s overall cardiopulmonary status using observation, auscultation, lab/bed-side tests, non-invasive monitoring and interview techniques.
  • Interviews patient to determine orientation, dyspnea, activities of daily living, social support, nutritional status, and learning needs.
  • Performs and interprets bedside procedures to including pulse oximetry, ABG analysis, Co-oximetery, mixed venous sampling, hemodynamic and pulmonary mechanics.
  • Obtains additional data by calculating lung compliance, airway resistance, work of breathing, PaO2 /FIO2 ration, and other noninvasive monitoring including airway graphics.
  • Selects, assembles, and checks equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness.
  • Performs quality control procedures for blood analysis devices, diagnostic equipment, ventilators, and gas metering devices.
  • Explains planned therapy and goals to patients and evaluate, monitor and record patient’s response to respiratory care.
  • Communicates results of therapy to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Performs blood gas sampling to include arterial punctures and sampling from arterial lines and swan ganz catheters.
  • Monitors mechanical ventilator patients to include: airway pressures, tidal volumes, respiratory rate, I/E ratio, FIO2, cuff pressure, and alarm settings.
  • Modifies mechanical ventilation to include recommendations in modifications of the respiratory care plan.
  • Assesses mechanical ventilator patients for weaning parameters and possible extubations.
  • Instructs, initiates, and adjusts mechanical nasal mask and negative pressure ventilation to achieve adequate spontaneous and artificial ventilation.
  • Modifies artificial airway management to include endotracheal tube positioning, cuff pressure monitoring, tracheotomy care, and adjustments in airway humidification systems.
  • Administer medicated aerosol therapy, encourage bronchopulmonary hygiene, and when indicated assist in suctioning of bronchopulmonary secretions.
  • Makes modifications in therapeutic procedures based on patient response.
  • Modifies oxygen and specialty gas therapy and make changes in mode, flow, and concentration when appropriate.
  • Explains various procedures being performed to other employees, patients, or patient family members.
  • Assists pulmonary physicians, as required.
  • Initiates, conducts, or modifies respiratory care techniques in an emergency.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Job Qualification

Associate's Degree or equivalent, required. Certificate of completion from an accredited respiratory therapy program, required.]Current NYS Respiratory Therapist license, required.Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience, preferred.
