Position Summary
Under general supervision from the Respiratory Manager and/or Director, and in accordance with the policies and guidelines established within the organization, the Respiratory Therapist routinely functions in patient care areas of the hospital. The Respiratory Therapist follows the provider prescription and/or established policies and procedures, initiates and administers respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies, and serves as a resource of knowledge to providers, nurses and other hospital team members regarding advanced respiratory diagnosis and rehabilitation.
Responsibilities
- Provide respiratory therapy to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies.
- Communicate findings to appropriate personnel and discuss conclusions with providers and nurses to resolve patient problems promptly.
- Evaluate objective and subjective information in a logical and thorough manner, including routine evaluation of both invasive and non‑invasive blood gases.
- Communicate ventilator recommendations based on patient evaluation and blood gases.
- Administer therapy according to provider orders and established protocols.
- Perform age‑specific respiratory therapies in accordance with provider orders and guidelines.
- Explain therapy to patients in understandable terms and assess patient response to therapy.
- Administer, assess and titrate oxygen therapy and modify therapy according to respiratory protocols.
- Notify Manager, nursing personnel and providers of any adverse patient reactions.
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assist with “Code Blue” as necessary, including BLS, ACLS, NRP and PALS guidelines.
- Assist providers with tracheal intubation when competent.
- Maintain artificial airways, including suctioning and securing endotracheal tubes and tracheostomy tubes.
- Utilize infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment in emergency situations.
- Assist with patient and family education and support other members of the healthcare team.
- Perform basic pulmonary function testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end‑tidal CO2 monitoring and transcutaneous oximetry.
- Assist with bedside bronchoscopies, intubations and extubations.
- Complete naso‑tracheal, endo‑tracheal, tracheal suction and sample collections.
- Assist with patient transport via walking, wheelchair, gurney or crib, and may assist with ambulance transports within the facility.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS); Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials (RRT) required within 1 year of hire for hires after 2004.
- Completion of AHA courses: BLS, ACLS, PALS and AAP‑NRP as required by the site; BLS within 3 months of hire, other certifications within 1 year.
- For BLH and BSH positions, completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (certificate, diploma, AS degree) and 5 years of experience; Bachelor's preferred.
- Ability to work in a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines, regular lifting of light‑weight objects (up to 50 pounds) and occasional heavier tasks.
- Demonstrated competency in customer service, age‑specific care, and commitment to continuous professional growth.
Additional Information
• Responsibilities include maintaining and cleaning respiratory equipment for readiness and supply availability.
• Supervision and instruction of Respiratory Care students, completing the preceptor course and supporting student development.
• Participation in departmental quality assurance and hospital-wide improvement initiatives.
