Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC, is seeking a full-time Respiratory Therapist in the Pulmonary Diagnostic Services (PDS) across UNC locations. The role focuses on a range of pulmonary diagnostic tests and patient care, within an on-site 40-hour work week.

The ideal candidate will be a graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, hold NC RCP licensure, and preferably possess an RRT credential, with strong clinical judgment and patient-focused care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) licensure in NC.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) preferred.
  • Two years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required.

Responsibilities

  • Administers standard Respiratory Care including aerosol delivery, basic bedside pulmonary function testing, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures.
  • May perform Pulmonary Function Testing as needed and support ventilator care.
  • On-call duties may be required on days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge; function independently and serve as a resource to staff.

Full-Time Respiratory Therapist - Pulmonary Diagnostic Services

Join our growing Pulmonary Diagnostic Services (PDS) team as a full-time Respiratory Therapist supporting pulmonary diagnostic testing across multiple UNC Health locations, including Eastowne PDS, Hillsborough PDS, and UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

Summary

In this role, you will perform a variety of pulmonary diagnostic procedures, including:

  • Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
  • Six-Minute Walk Studies
  • Flow Volume Loops (FVL)
  • Diffusing Capacity (DLCO)
  • High Altitude Simulation Testing (HAST)
  • Shunt Studies
  • Metabolic Studies
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)
  • Other specialized pulmonary diagnostic procedures

The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, demonstrate strong clinical judgment, and provide high-quality patient care consistent with professional and regulatory standards.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) licensure
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential preferred
  • Critical Care experience preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and patient care skills

This position reports directly to the Pulmonary Diagnostic Services Manager and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued growth and expansion of Pulmonary Diagnostic Services while supporting exceptional patient care across multiple clinical settings.

Responsibilities
  • Administers standard Respiratory Care including but not limited to, aerosol medication delivery, basic bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures. Provides for all aspects of airway management including aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy care, tracheostomy tube changes, endotracheal intubations and extubations. May perform Pulmonary Function Testing as needed.
  • May be required to be on-call days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • May Perform all aspects of ventilator care to include but not limited to setting up the ventilator and verifying function using specialized ventilator modes to manage the patient's disease process. Provide for an appropriate monitoring of these patients and provide appropriate weaning techniques.
  • Maintains and improves job knowledge and skills. Functions independently with minimal supervision. Serves as resource to other staff reflective of experience level.

Education Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board. Must be registered (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care. Note: Current teammates with active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification by the NBRC and a minimum of 15 years of experience as a CRT and are ineligible for the RRT board exam with demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of respiratory care also qualify for this role. Dependent upon population served and regardless of if RRT or CRT, all teammates must have at least one of the following depending upon practice area: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Adult Care , Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - NICU, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - PICU/Rex, Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT), or advanced practice certificate to administer moderate sedation in Bronchoscopy Lab. All certifications must be maintained as required by the certifying body.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures. Ability to document clinical information. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from patients, physicians, family members, and other staff. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical situations.
