Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Care; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Current State of Texas RCP license (RCP) and RRT certification typically required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; ACLS and PALS often preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and directs activities between interdisciplinary teams to ensure efficient departmental throughput and positive outcomes.
  • Coordinates with nursing, labs, and radiology to maintain proper turn-around times.
  • Acts as a mentor/coach; participates in annual performance reviews of assigned staff.
  • Provides leadership and uses clinical judgment to address patient care concerns and improve quality and safety.

Job Summary

Responsible for serving as a clinical expert in the delivery and management of comprehensive respiratory care, utilizing research and evidence-based practice as necessary; for expertly caring for patients from multiple services/specialties, and for more complex diagnosis.

Location: Children's Memorial Hermann

Shift: FT, Day

  • RRT
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS
  • RRT Highly preferred
  • 5+ years RT experience required.
  • Previous PICU and/or pediatric critical care respiratory therapy experience.
  • Previous charge Therapist, Lead Therapist, Educator, Preceptor, or other leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Expert in mechanical ventilation management, HFOV, JET, nitric oxide, and advanced respiratory support modalities in pediatric patients.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Care, required; Bachelor’s degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications
  • Current State of Texas RCP license
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Certified in Basic Life Support
  • Additional specialty certification from the NBRC, preferred
Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience
  • Five (5) years of critical care experience, preferred
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
Principal Accountabilities
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs all activities between the interdisciplinary team to direct and facilitate departmental throughput in order to attain positive outcomes.
  • Coordinates with nursing and ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology to ensure proper turn-around times.
  • Acts as a liaison, to departmental staff, medical personnel, patients and family members; assist in any patient care concerns, issues and complaints; conducts daily leadership rounding on assigned unit.
  • Utilizes critical thinking and sound clinical judgment and works autonomously to solve problems; escalates issues or notifies department leaders of significant occurrences, intervention, or delays, as appropriate.
  • Acts as a mentor/coach to assigned staff and provides input into the annual performance review of those staff members.
  • Participates in a systemic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, process improvement and desired client-centered outcomes.
  • Considers the diverse needs of each patient through the entire continuum of care, providing and ensuring the highest level of service according to established service standards, optimizing the patient experience.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
