Job Overview

Under general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer or Deputy Chief Medical Officer, the Respiratory Therapist assists in the diagnostic testing and evaluation of pulmonary dysfunction in patients and provides care, treatment, and rehabilitation to patients with pulmonary disorders through respiratory therapy, physical therapy, and ventilatory assistance in emergent, inpatient, and outpatient settings.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Administers therapeutic gasses, aerosols and humidity utilizing a variety of techniques and equipment in the urgent care, emergency department and inpatient setting.
  • Administers pressure breathing and chest physical therapy as indicated by underlying pathology.
  • Assists in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation; monitors and measures pulmonary and cardiovascular function, blood gas values, and oxygen concentration; draws arterial and capillary blood gases; performs intubation upon request from a provider.
  • Services and maintains respiratory equipment; demonstrates and trains nurses, physicians, trainees, and other hospital personnel on respiratory equipment and techniques.
  • Records therapy services; prepares patient charges; evaluates equipment and supplies; and may requisition and/or purchase equipment and supplies as appropriate.
  • Performs pulmonary function testing under the supervision of a qualified pulmonology physician in an outpatient setting.
  • Takes on‑call coverage for the Emergency Department and Acute Care Unit, as assigned.
  • Works comfortably independently and requires completion of tasks or duties assigned by a supervisor.
  • Upholds all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent.
  • Adheres to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry.
  • Adheres to WIHCCs Personnel Policies and Procedures, departmental policies, rules, and regulations.

  • Maintains compliance with all Human Resources requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in an accredited respiratory therapy program (required); Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care with a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential; Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential preferred.
  • Active state respiratory therapy license from any U.S. state; must have active ACLS or complete ACLS certification by time of hire.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Navajo preferred.
  • Valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license.
  • Successfully pass a background investigation and maintain suitable requirements for a Child Care position. This position is considered a Child Care position and requires a satisfactory background check investigation and is subject to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (ICPFVP Act).

Physical Demands

Walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects and equipment, reach with hands and arms, and communicate effectively by talking and hearing. Frequently stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Performed in an office setting or outdoor environment with moderate noise levels, exposure to physical risks such as blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or potentially dangerous equipment. Work may involve evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular schedules and rotations as operational needs dictate.

Preferred Qualified Applicants

As required by P.L. 93‑638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants. If there is no qualified Navajo applicant, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
