Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist I (RT I) provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to patients of all age groups. Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies, providing airway maintenance and manual and mechanical ventilatory support using various devices and techniques. Administers therapeutic gases, inhaled aerosol medications, and humidity therapy. Obtains, reviews, and interprets data, assesses the need for and response to respiratory care interventions, and consults with medical and nursing personnel to optimize patient care planning. Performs arterial blood gas analysis and various cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures. Provides patient and family instruction in respiratory therapy self-administration and proper equipment use.

Responsibilities

1. Perform procedures and treatments according to physician orders and departmental policies.
2. Participate in and support Performance Improvement activities.
3. Perform advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, interpret data, and assist in clinical decision-making.
4. Record procedures and maintain current documentation for patients receiving therapy.
5. Attend departmental meetings and communication activities.
6. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and effective communication.
7. Maintain safety and infection control standards, report unsafe conditions.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Flexibility to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within teams.
• Knowledge of respiratory care procedures and techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in critical or emergency care.
• Experience with patient-driven protocols.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid California Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
• Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) from NBRC.
• American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications.

Additional Information

Salary range: $59.63 - $74.64 hourly. Benefits information available on UCSF website. The position is full-time, evening shift, located at St. Mary’s campus, on-site.
