Job Summary

The Respiratory Care Supervisor (RCS) is the front‑line representative for the Respiratory Care Management Team. The RCS oversees shift operations of the Respiratory Therapy Department, provides direct patient care staff development and training, resolves patient care and equipment problems, participates in process improvement initiatives, monitors work performance of assigned therapists, and performs related administrative functions. The RCS advocates accountability, professional communication, teamwork, and shared decision‑making among team members and serves as a role model, leader, and mentor.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate all clinical and support staff assigned to the shift; develop daily operational assignments and assure workload assignments are appropriate based on clinical competence and patient needs.
  • Redistribute staff and resources as necessary to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operations and balance operational and patient‑care needs with budget performance targets.
  • Assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of policies and performance‑improvement activities; collaborate with the Respiratory Care Leadership Team to keep policies, procedures, and clinical practices up to date and evidence‑based.
  • Deliver competent care in all clinical settings, applying advanced clinical skills to intervene in complex patient‑care situations and assist staff with technical and clinical support.
  • Plan and perform quality‑improvement activities and audits; develop documents and implement plans, tools, and activities to improve quality and patient safety.
  • Respond to, assess, and resolve all emergency situations; intervene to ensure safe and well‑coordinated patient care and upward escalation for medical emergencies; insure sufficient availability of clean and properly functioning equipment.
  • Conduct daily staffing huddles for staff development and information dissemination.
  • Model and encourage clear, open communication and ideas sharing; foster teamwork and involve others in decision‑making; facilitate problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Act as a liaison between staff therapists, physicians, nursing, and other personnel within the clinical service; identify existing and/or potential problem areas and offer appropriate solutions.
  • Promote creativity and discovery; seek methods to improve work, use new knowledge to drive change and innovation, and seek support from key stakeholders.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Associate’s degree or higher from an AMA‑accredited respiratory care program (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related healthcare field (preferred).
Experience
  • 4‑5 years acute‑care experience (required).
  • 1‑2 years supervisory experience (required).
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) (required).
  • Maintain license to practice Respiratory Care in Maryland and/or the District of Columbia, as applicable.
  • CPR (BLS and NRP) certification from AHA or American Red Cross required within 90 days.
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary; ACLS, NRP, PALS and others are preferred within a year when required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Professionalism, courtesy, and excellent customer service; strong clinical and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and motivate staff, develop constructive relationships, foster teamwork, and resolve conflict.
  • Effective time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices for clinical performance, infection prevention, and patient safety.
  • Ability to manage changing workloads, staff and equipment shortages, and patient‑care issues.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, email, EMR, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience planning and conducting in‑service education and training.
Compensation

USD $87,318.40 – $149,094.40 per year.
