Responsibilities

  • Respiratory Therapists provide care under physician order and/or direction in compliance with established patient guidelines.
  • Interpret blood gases and manipulate vent parameters to achieve therapeutic goals per physician orders.
  • Document thoroughly regarding patient assessment, therapy, and charges.
  • Perform pulmonary evaluation/assessment and plan discharge needs.
  • Attend at least 80% of team staff meetings.
  • Demonstrate proper use of supplies and equipment in patient care.
  • Medical Gas and Humidity Therapy; Airway Management; Blood Gas Analysis; EKG; Bedside Pulmonary Function Testing; Disease Management Education.

Key Responsibilities

Respiratory Therapists provide care under physician order and/or direction in compliance with established patient guidelines. Must possess a level of clinical expertise, including but not limited to, an understanding of the adult/pediatric patient’s condition, determine appropriate care, deliver emergency care as needed, and verbalize the indication and rationale for therapy with the attending physician. Must possess the skills to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, family members/visitors, interdisciplinary personnel, and with Respiratory teammates.

Must have the ability to interpret blood gases and manipulate invasive and non-invasive vent parameters to attain therapeutic goals per physician orders. Must be able to manage time to complete patient workload according to the physician-prescribed schedule. Must be able to document thoroughly regarding all patient assessment, therapy, and charges in the patient records.

Must be able to perform pulmonary initial evaluation/assessment and have the knowledge necessary to provide in depth evaluation of patients with chronic lung conditions. Must be able to evaluate patients’ needs on both their inpatient stay and existing needs for upon discharge. Must attend and participate in at least 80% of team staff meetings. Demonstrates proper use and knowledge of supplies and equipment in providing patient care:

Unit Specific Requirements for Inpatient/ER/OBS Respiratory Therapists:
  • ACLS through American Heart Association – within 6 months of hire or signature of new job description (then continuously maintained).
  • PALS through American Heart Association – within 6 months of hire or signature of new job description (then continuously maintained).
Preferences:
Unit Specific Preferences for Outpatient PFT/Pulmonary Rehab Respiratory Therapists:
  • Completion of COPD Educator Course
  • Adult Asthma Educator Specialist (AE-C) Certification
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in pulmonary rehab and/or pulmonary function testing
Unit Specific Preferences for Inpatient/ER/OBS Respiratory Therapists:
  • NRP
  • S.T.A.B.L.E
  • Completion of COPD educator course
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced Certifications of: ACCS, NPS, AE-C
  • Two years Respiratory experience with at least one year in adult/pediatric critical care
