Job summary

Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, CA seeks an entry-level Respiratory Therapist for night 12-hour shifts (0.9 FTE). Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per physician orders, with duties across adult patients.

Training and supervision provided, with opportunities to advance and contribute to patient care on a fast-paced team. You will administer medications and gases, manage airway care and ventilatory support, document findings, and educate patients and staff.

Qualifications

• AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION APPROVED RESPIRATORY CARE PROGRAM WITH ASSOCIATE DEGREE; BACHELOR'S DEGREE PREFERRED.
• No prior respiratory care experience required for entry level.
• Ability to adjust communication to patient and team needs.

Responsibilities

• Administer aerosolized medications via HHN, MDI, DPI, IPV.
• Deliver medical gases through various devices and ensure patient comfort.
• Perform routine tracheostomy care and weaning as appropriate.
• Ensure safety and maintenance of respiratory care equipment.
• Document results in the electronic medical record.
• Conduct airway clearance and pulmonary mechanics assessments.
• Respond to cardiopulmonary arrests and rapid response calls.
• Educate patients and staff about procedures and therapies.
• Manage CPAP/BiPAP support and invasive home ventilators as needed.
• Obtain arterial blood gas samples and analyze results.

A Brief Overview

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders or protocols. Defined duties are performed in adult patient populations. This is an entry level position.

What You Will Do

• Administration of aerosolized medications via handheld nebulizers (HHN), metered dose inhalers (MDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI), large volume continuous nebulizers, and intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV);
• Administration of medical gases via nasal cannulas, oxygen masks, high flow nasal cannulas, and large volume nebulizers;
• Performing routine tracheostomy care, weaning, and downsizing;
• Assembling and assuring safety and proper functioning of all equipment /supplies necessary for providing respiratory care;
• Documentation of results, findings, and assessments in the patient’s electronic medical record;
• Performing airway clearance using chest physiotherapy (CPT), vibratory positive expiratory pressure devices, cough assist device, or nasotracheal suctioning;
• Assessing pulmonary mechanics using portable spirometry devices;
• Responding to cardiopulmonary arrests and rapid response calls;
• Responds to calls and provides therapy to patients requiring emergency care for non- traumatic conditions;
• Educating patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team about routine respiratory procedures, medications, modalities, and disease processes;
• Providing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or biphasic positive airway pressure (BiPAP) for patients who require ventilatory support;
• Providing invasive ventilation for medically stable patients who use such devices at home;
• Performing arterial blood gas sampling and analysis;
• Oversees and trains staff and community college students working on general medical floors.

Education Qualifications

• AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AMA) APPROVED RESPIRATORY CARE PROGRAM WITH RECEIPT OF AN ASSOCIATE LEVEL DEGREE
• BACHELOR’S DEGREE PREFERRED.

Experience Qualifications

• No Previous Respiratory Care Experience Required

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver;
• Ability to think critically, conduct analysis, formulate conclusions, and reflect on practice;
• Ability to process equipment and utilize personal protective equipment to reduce risk of infection;
• Understanding of commonly used medical terminology;
• Knowledge of new technologies, changes in practice, or updates relating to respiratory care;
• Knowledge of the principles of health, hospital, and clinic organization and administration;
• Knowledge of the indications, contraindications, and hazards of respiratory therapies, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology related to the cardiopulmonary system;
• Ability to provide superior customer service along with quality respiratory care to positively impact patient experience and outcomes

Licenses and Certifications

• RTT - Registered Respiratory Therapist required, with advanced credentialing preferred (e.g., RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, CPFT, RPFT) . and
• BLS - Basic Life Support required .
• ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support required .
• RCP - Licensed Respiratory Care Practitione in CA required .

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $62.26 - $70.14 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
