Under the general direction of the department manager, and according to departmental and hospital standards, the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP-I) is responsible for administering all levels of Respiratory Care to treat patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction and/or disabilities. The RCP-I functions at the usual and customary levels for Acute Care and ER, maintaining skills and knowledge to provide safe, effective, and appropriate care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and adults.

Must demonstrate competency in all aspects of acute care delivery and ER procedures prior to the completion of the initial 90 days.

  • Administers all general Respiratory Therapy procedures, including humidity and aerosol therapy, lung inflation maneuvers, pulmonary secretion clearance, CPAP, BiPAP, and High-Flow Therapy.
  • Demonstrates basic mechanical ventilator management skills, including setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Performs CPR as indicated and conducts invasive and non-invasive monitoring and diagnostic procedures as assigned to specific care areas.
  • Works independently within the ER and all acute care areas.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures established by Respiratory Care Services and Children's National Health System.
  • Organizes, establishes priorities, and communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Performs well under stressful situations using good clinical judgment.
  • Demonstrates compassion and a patient-centered approach when dealing with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Performs necessary mathematical calculations.
  • Maintains clinical skills and required continuing education credits, including BLS, PALS, FIT Testing, annual skills review, and in-services.
  • Possesses the physical ability to perform all treatment modalities, move, and lift up to 50 lbs, and endure long periods of standing and walking.
  • Has basic computer skills.
Qualifications

Required Education:

Associates Degree: Completion of at least two years of college training in an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program.

Minimum Experience:

One year of work experience in Respiratory Care is preferred.

Successful completion of academic clinical rotations is required.

Licenses:

RCP License from District of Columbia DOH Health Regulation and Licensing Administration is required.

Certifications:

BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS are required.
