Respiratory Care Practitioner II – Fairfield Hospital
Job Summary
The Respiratory Care Practitioner II is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. This includes performing all respiratory care procedures such as oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education. The practitioner monitors patient responses to therapies and makes recommendations for modifications based on assessment.
Essential Functions
- Serve as shift “Charge Therapist,” ensuring adequate staffing and assigning respiratory care staff to work areas, modifying assignments, assisting with meal coverage, fielding call‑offs, and maintaining staffing levels for the next shift.
- Assist physicians in procedures such as bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy intubation (if performed by respiratory therapy in the facility), tracheostomy endotracheal tube changes, and invasive monitoring.
- Perform CPR, including closed‑chest compressions and airway management techniques in accordance with the AHA ACLS protocol.
- Conduct therapeutic procedures to maintain a patient airway, including use of appropriate airways, humidification, aspiration of secretions, extubation, cuff pressure maintenance, and documentation in patient and department records.
- Select, assemble, monitor, and evaluate mechanical ventilators, correct malfunctions, maintain cleanliness, and determine appropriate use based on patient condition.
- Perform pulmonary function tests (PFT) as needed.
- Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
- Assess patient physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavioral observation, and review of existing data.
- Perform treatments per physician orders, explain therapy and goals to patients, and modify procedures based on patient response.
- Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommend methods to physicians, including IPPB, aerosol therapy, postural drainage, percussion, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers, spacers, etc.
- Set up and maintain various oxygen therapy modes to achieve adequate PaO2 levels.
- Administer IPPB or aerosol therapy, prepare medication, adjust devices, document vital signs, evaluate productiveness, and judge potential adverse reactions.
- Give postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper bronchial secretion drainage.
- Instruct patients and families on incentive spirometry, metered dose inhaler use, postural drainage, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy.
- Obtain sputum for culture and sensitivity or perform airway clearance, including mucolytics, aerosol therapy, or suctioning.
- Evaluate normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory values.
- Perform arterial punctures, analyze, and interpret arterial blood gas (ABG). Perform arterial line procedures with sterile technique and safety precautions.
- May perform EKGs; understand electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
- Maintain all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
- Respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and actively participate as indicated by clinical circumstances.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health Care, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration (preferred).
Required Licensing & Certifications
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required).
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required).
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred).
- BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required).
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association or Red Cross (required).
- PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (required).
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – AAP/AWHONN (preferred).
- Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) (preferred).
- Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) (preferred).
- ACCS (Adult Critical Care Specialist) – NBRC (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license (required for Home Care/DME).
Experience
- Two years of experience as a Respiratory Care Professional (required).
Skills & Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other staff.
- Excellent communication, customer service, organizational, and time‑management skills.
- Ability to receive feedback, gather and interpret data, and maintain accountability.
- Knowledge of non‑invasive respiratory therapy equipment such as oximeters and end‑tidal CO2 analyzers.
- Proficiency in therapeutic procedures including CPAP/BiPAP, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high‑flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, and diagnostic testing.
- Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
- Experience with arterial blood gas punctures and testing, airway maneuvers, bedside pulmonary function testing, patient assessment, patient education, and chest suction equipment.
- Knowledge of chest X‑ray interpretation.
Training
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
