Job summary

Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls, MN, is seeking a Resource Planner to help shape our long‑term resource strategy and ensure reliable, affordable service for years to come.

You will analyze future energy and capacity needs, support regulatory filings, and evaluate resource options while collaborating with experienced planners and regional stakeholders on generation resources, resource adequacy, renewable compliance, and forecasting models.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering, economics, finance, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of utility operations, energy markets, resource planning, forecasting, or related analytical functions.
  • Strong analytical, financial modeling, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects while meeting deadlines and regulatory filing requirements.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, forecasting tools, or modeling software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, regulatory personnel, industry organizations, and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of long-term resource plans, regulatory filings, and compliance reporting across Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
  • Perform resource planning analysis to evaluate future energy needs, resource adequacy requirements, and potential resource options.
  • Assist with capacity expansion studies, forecasting activities, and planning models used for regulatory and business decision-making.
  • Monitor capacity positions and resource adequacy requirements within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) footprint.
  • Coordinate and support annual and periodic regulatory filings, industry surveys, and compliance reports.
  • Develop and maintain datasets, assumptions, analytical tools, and planning models used for resource planning and forecasting.
  • Analyze the impacts of proposed projects, resource alternatives, and regulatory developments affecting long-term planning decisions.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and participate in industry groups and regional planning activities.

The Resource Planner I is a grade 11 and the Resource Planner II is a grade 13.

Otter Tail Power is looking for a Resource Planner to help shape the long-term resource strategy that powers our customers and communities. This position plays an important role in evaluating future energy and capacity needs, supporting regulatory filings, analyzing resource options, and helping ensure reliable, affordable service for years to come.

Whether hired at the Resource Planner I or Resource Planner II level, you'll work alongside experienced planners, business leaders, and regional stakeholders to support critical decisions involving generation resources, resource adequacy, renewable compliance, and long-term energy planning.

What You’ll Do

As a Resource Planner, you will contribute analytical, modeling, and regulatory support that helps guide the company's long-term resource decisions and planning activities.

  • The expected offer for base compensation for this role is $76,000 - $127,000 annually. The actual compensation within the salary grade range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
