Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range

$57,900.00 - $95,600.00

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers Residual Markets (TRM) is responsible for underwriting and providing policy services for workers compensation policies to businesses who otherwise cannot obtain coverage. As a Residual Markets Underwriter, you are responsible for the underwriting and account management of an assigned book of business. In this role, you will determine appropriate classifications, exposures, and premium pricing through effective collaboration, negotiation, and productive relationships with business leaders and other business partners, state plan administrators and regulatory authorities, customers, and agents/brokers.

What Will You Do?
  • Underwrite and independently manage an assigned book of business to achieve business objectives; book of business may include accounts from any Business Insurance industry and account size.
  • Evaluate risk information through review, investigation, and analysis; identify underwriting discrepancies to ensure premium avoidance is mitigated and appropriate coverage exists.
  • Contribute to the successful winning of bids and the addition/retention of direct assignment clients by consistently achieving underwriting, financial, and compliance objectives.
  • Build effective relationships with state plan administrators and regulatory authorities and direct assignment companies, demonstrating knowledge and expertise critical to the winning of bids and direct assignment contracts; promote Travelers products by maintaining positive relationships with agencies and insureds.
  • Provide guidance to business partners on when to deviate from procedural and underwriting guidelines; help resolve issues with account premiums that cannot be resolved through the dispute process.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for underwriting systems and process questions; may issue transactions that are too complex for the offshore vendor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Three years of insurance experience, preferably as an underwriter.
  • General knowledge of property and casualty insurance products and services, preferably Workers Compensation, Assigned Risk products and services, or commercial insurance functions (i.e., Claim, Risk Control, Premium Audit, etc.).
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills, particularly pertaining to risk taking, problem solving, and evaluation of complex information.
  • Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly convey information to various audiences.
  • Relationship building skills with the ability to influence others.
  • Ability to identify and understand customer needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
