Duties and Responsibilities
- Promote a team-oriented atmosphere
- Facilitate a pre-shift "huddle" to communicate responsibilities and expectations of the shift
- Assign shift responsibilities to the DSP staff by completing the shift assignment sheet for each shift
- Monitor the weekly schedule of direct care staff to ensure the necessary coverage to meet the supervision and transportation needs of the individuals, covering shifts when needed
- Provide a level of consistent and constant oversight to the DSP staff throughout each shift to ensure that communication of the shift's activities is completed and that all the shift responsibilities are completed
- Professionally address observed staff conflict or performance issues in real time, documenting notes and completing a weekly log to update the Residence Manager
- Regularly provide performance feedback on DSPs to the Residence Manager
- Complete the "Shift Manager Checklist" for each shift
- Act as a point person for emergency situations, spearheading the communication to the Residence Manager and direction of staff
- Participate in all required documentation practices, providing daily checks of all documentation to ensure that it is complete prior to the ending of each shift and following up with staff to obtain missing documentation
- Monitor the quality and regulatory compliance of documentation, providing feedback and direction when needed
- Organize impromptu outings when needed
- Ensure that in-house and community activities occur as scheduled, attending at least 2 outings per month
- Meet with management team on a weekly basis
- Schedule and facilitate monthly house meetings with the residents to focus on their individual rights, likes and dislikes, ensuring they are making choices for outings, meals, in-house activities, etc.
- Complete meeting minutes and ensure changes are made and planning occurs on the residents’ requests
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and other meetings as scheduled or requested, creating meeting agendas
- Attend any medical/health related appointments of the residents as needed
- Assist in maintaining the upkeep of the physical plant by participating in and ensuring DSP staff are performing housekeeping tasks as per documented checklists (including meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, shopping etc.)
- Actively participate in the shift to model appropriate behavior and professional work habits
- Perform at least 2 direct care shifts per week as assigned by the Residence Manager
- Facilitate active participation of the residents by implementing their individual program plan in their home and community
- Implement behavior support plans and Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP-r) accurately and consistently
- Engage in any necessary lifting, moving and/or positioning tasks for residents
- Facilitate improved gross motor, fine motor and range of motion skills
- Assist residents with bathing, toileting, dressing and eating as needed including modeling appropriate behavior, using therapeutic equipment and/or therapeutic feeding
- Foster receptive and expressive communication through many different avenues including sign language, pictograms and electronic devices
- Implement fire, safety and emergency procedures in accordance with agency and program standards, facilitating fire drill practices and completing documentation when necessary
- Administer medications to residents
- .Implement and follow all required individual programming, Agency and Program-specific policies and procedures accurately, consistently and according to how they are written
- Assists in transportation to and from recreational activities, appointments, etc. as required
- Certify DSP staff in driving Agency vehicles as directed.
- Assist the Residence Manager and the DSP II Staff Support Specialist with orientation and training of new staff, helping to ensure the training packets are up-to-date
- As determined by the needs of the IRA, this position may be required to take on extra responsibilities of a vacant DSP II position (Activities Coordinator, Med Liaison, Behavior Technician or Staff Support Specialist), as determined by the Residence Manager.
- As determined by the needs of the department, this position may be required to obtain and maintain Train-the-Trainer certifications for SCIP-r or CPR/First Aid; and provide the training to new staff along with updates in these areas, as requested and scheduled.
- All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree in a related field and 2+ years of relevant work experience or an equivalent of education and experience
- Internal applicants with less experience may be considered after successful completion of identified Shift Manager Development plan
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English including interpreting documents such as safety rules and policy and procedure manuals
- Possess a current and valid NYS driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
