Summary Of Responsibilities

The Resident Director (RD) is a part‑time, live‑in professional responsible for the daily operations and oversight of one or more residential communities at Schreiner University. The RD plays a vital role in building an inclusive and engaging living‑learning environment that supports student success, community development, crisis management, and staff supervision. A successful RD demonstrates a strong commitment to student development and institutional values while fostering community engagement and maintaining building operations. The position reports to the Director of Residence Life and includes frequent evening and weekend responsibilities, on‑call coverage, and engagement with students across all areas of the residential experience.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise and support a staff of Resident Assistants (RAs) and a Senior Resident Assistant (SRA).


• Conduct weekly staff meetings and regular one‑on‑one check‑ins.


• Evaluate staff performance and support their professional development.


• Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of student staff.


• Support and help facilitate fall, spring, and in‑service RA training sessions.


• Foster staff leadership through mentorship, coaching, and access to professional development opportunities.


• Serve as a professional liaison for students, families, and university constituents.


• Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with facility services, food service, and security personnel.

Student Success & Community Engagement

• Implement the department’s Residential Experience through programming, intentional interactions, and leadership development initiatives.


• Promote a positive living‑learning environment and responsible community membership.


• Engage students through social, cultural, recreational, and educational programming.


• Collaborate with campus partners on initiatives related to student retention, academic success, and well‑being.


• Encourage faculty engagement in residence hall activities and programs.


• Take meals in campus dining facilities to maintain visibility and connection with residents.

Crisis Management & Student Support

• Serve in a weekly departmental on‑call rotation covering all on‑campus residential communities.


• Conduct evening rounds during assigned on‑call weekends and check in with RAs on duty.


• Respond to student concerns, incidents, and crises, providing appropriate support, documentation, and follow‑up.


• Act as a student conduct officer within the assigned community.


• Refer students to campus resources to address academic, emotional, or social concerns.


• Maintain confidentiality regarding student and university matters in accordance with university policy.

Building & Operational Management

• Oversee community operations including opening, closing, occupancy management, and maintenance.


• Manage room assignments, move‑ins/outs, room change requests, and occupancy tracking.


• Collaborate with maintenance and custodial staff to ensure safe, clean, and functional living environments.


• Report maintenance and custodial concerns electronically in an efficient manner such that needs gain attention and problems are resolved in a timely fashion.


• Conduct and document routine health and fire safety inspections.


• Submit maintenance and custodial requests efficiently and monitor resolution timelines.


• Maintain administrative records related to facilities, budgets, programming, and conduct.

Administrative Functions

• Support departmental assessments and evaluation of programs and services.


• Administer and maintain documentation of routine fire safety checks.


• Assist the Director of Residence Life in development of procedures for housing registration, hall assignments, opening and closing the residence halls, and room changes/consolidation. Assume primary responsibility for completion of these procedures within respective residence hall.


• Maintain high level of confidentiality regarding student, departmental, divisional, and University information and activities when appropriate.


• Assist the Director of Residence Life in the development of research and assessment methods to obtain data on student interests, perceptions, and needs.

Other Duties

• Promote integration of Residence Life with academic initiatives and faculty involvement.


• Represent Residence Life at university events, trainings, and committee meetings.


• Complete other tasks, special projects, and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Residence Life, Assistant Director, or Dean of Students.

Education, Experience And Skills Required

• Bachelor’s degree and/or some college or equivalent experience required.


• Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or related field preferred.


• Experience living in a group setting expected.


• Residence Life or Student Activities experience preferred.


• Knowledge of student and/or human development strongly desired.


• Exceptional organizational skills.


• Ability to work with minimum structure and guidance expected.
