Job summary

Kids for the Future is seeking an Independent Living Plus Resident Advisor to promote youth well-being on campus. You will supervise and support residents, teach life skills identified by Life Skills Coach, and manage essential recordkeeping.

You will work with a treatment team to ensure youths meet treatment goals, model independent living, and collaborate across departments to foster employment, education, mentorship, and community involvement.

Qualifications

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the treatment team and ensure residents meet goals.
  • Lead and support residents by teaching independent living skills and using approved de-escalation methods.
  • Model life skills such as assertiveness, communication, conflict management, and decision making.
  • Care for residents and monitor safety; assist with daily activities and community resource engagement.
  • Collaborate with departments and participate in group or individual planning.
  • Complete paperwork, logs, and monthly reports.
  • Transport children as needed using agency vehicle.
  • Promote cultural sensitivity in interactions.
  • Follow Employee Handbook and program policies.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission and perform other duties as assigned.

I.JOB SUMMARY

AnIndependentLivingPlus(ILP)ResidentAdvisor(R.A.)promotesthewell-beingofyouthliving on

campus as part of the agency’s Independent Living Plus program by providing supervision and support, teachingoflifeskillsidentifiedanddocumentedbytheLifeSkillsCoach,andcompletingrecordkeeping functions.

II.DUTIES&ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS
  • Serve as a member of the treatment team with the responsibility for ensuring each child successfully completes the goals set forth in their treatment plan.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and support to residents by teaching independent living skills and using agency approved methods of de-escalation and crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Appropriately model life skills to the youth in the program including, but not limited to assertiveness, communication, conflict management, problemsolving, and decisionmaking.
  • Care for residents at all times; assess common areas to ensure safety of youth; assist residents with daily life activities; monitor youth participation with community resources for the benefit of youth’s employment, education, mentorship, and volunteerism.
  • Collaborate with all necessary departments in planning for the group or its individual members and participate in making decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Independent Living team to promote compliance with each

  • Use an agency vehicle to transport children, or conduct agency business, as necessary.
  • Advocate, promote and practice cultural sensitivity and responsiveness in all day-to-day interactions.
  • Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, program Operation Manual and agency policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHS’s mission and vision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Independent Living Supervisor.
III.BASIC COMPETENCIES
Educationand Experience
  • Highschooldiplomaorequivalentrequired.Bachelor’sdegreeinarelatedfield preferred.
  • 1-3yearsofexperienceworkinginhumanserviceswithseriousemotionaldisorder(SED)at-risk youth males between the ages of 16 – 19 preferred.
Knowledge Requirements:
  • Thebehaviorpatternsofat-riskyouthandmethodsofmodifyingbehaviorandmotivatingyouth towards their goals.
  • Basicindependentlivingskillssuchasmoneymanagement,homemanagementandeducation planning.
SkillsandAbilities Needed :
  • Relatetoyouthandgaintheirrespectand confidence.
  • Utilizede-escalationtechniquestocontrolyouth behavior.
  • Attendagencytrainingsandmaintainnecessary certifications.
  • Effectivelycommunicateverballyandin writing.
  • Respectclient’srightstoself-determinationand independence.
  • Appropriatelyhandlephysicalandemotionalbehavioroftheyouthsthatmayinvolve adversarial or hostile situations.
  • Demonstrateexcellentlisteningskills,patienceandtoleranceof differences.
  • Respondtocommoninquiriesorcomplaintsfromclientsorcare providers.
  • Actasaresourcetohelpguideanddirectclientsto independence.
  • MaintainavalidMichigandriver’slicense;meetunderwritingstandardswhiledriving agency
  • vehiclesand/ortransporting clients.
IV.JOBSETTINGANDPHYSICAL DEMANDS

Workisperformedintheoffice,treatmentandresidentialfacilities,andworksites.Frequenttravelmay involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions, unsanitary living conditions, communicable diseases and unsafe environments. Duties may require contact with persons who are hostile or abusive, or with children who are upset and confused.
