Job summary

County of Fresno is seeking a Reserve Juvenile Correctional Officer for the Fresno County Probation Department. The role involves direct supervision, counseling, and transport of youth, both on the Juvenile Justice Campus and in the community.

Position is an extra-help (temporary) classification; incumbents are paid hourly and not eligible for benefits. Work may include nights, weekends, and holidays at the Juvenile Justice Campus near Highway 99 and American Avenue.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
• 30 semester units completed within US accredited system.
• Substitution: 1 year youth work substituting for 15 units.
• Valid Class C driver's license; Class B may be required for some incumbents.
• First Aid and CPR certificate required prior to appointment.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must meet pre-employment and ongoing peace officer status requirements.

Education

• Possession of a United States' high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Completion of thirty (30) semester units of coursework that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.
• Substitution: One (1) year of full-time, paid or volunteer experience working with youth in a public setting may substitute for fifteen (15) semester units of the required education.
• License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent. Incumbents may be required to obtain a Class "B" driver's license, or equivalent.
• Certificate: Possession of a valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate is required prior to appointment.
• Age: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Other: Under California Penal Code Section 830.5, the Reserve Juvenile Correctional Officer classification is defined as a Peace Officer. Therefore, candidates must be able to meet all pre-employment as well as ongoing peace officer status requirements pursuant to Federal, State, and local legislation.

Please note: Reserve Juvenile Correctional Officer is an extra-help (temporary) classification; Incumbents are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked, are not entitled to benefits, do not obtain permanent status, and serve at the will of the department head. Successful candidates will be placed at the Juvenile Justice Campus (located at Highway 99 and American Avenue).

Applicants must be willing to work overtime if necessary and shifts as assigned including nights, weekends and holidays.

As a condition of employment with the Probation Department, candidates must undergo and pass a thorough and rigid background investigation, polygraph, and medical and psychological examinations. The background investigation will require candidates to provide information regarding personal history including legal issues - arrests and/or convictions; personal information - relatives, references, and acquaintances; verification of education, experience and employment; residences; financial status; military service; and vehicle operation history. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive; other relevant areas may be investigated and verified.

SELECTION PROCESS

Written BSCC Examination - Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the written examination process. Applicants who cannot attend their scheduled exam can reapply and be scheduled for the next available written exam. Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months, and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur. Should a recruitment be open on a continuous basis, eligibles shall be certified in the order they are received not to exceed the maximum certification the department is entitled to.

• Tentative Initial Exam Date: March 20, 2026
• Subsequent exams will be tentatively conducted monthly.
• Tentative Initial Interview Dates: April 14-15, 2026
• Subsequent interviews will be conducted approximately two weeks following candidate certification to the hiring department.

• The written examination is developed and mandated by the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC). The BSCC has a Candidate Orientation Booklet available to applicants interested in an overview of the exam. You may download a copy of the Candidate Orientation Booklet at http://www.bscc.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/COB.pdf. The BSCC Selection Exam for Local Corrections is a newly developed, statewide examination in use by California agencies for the selection of entry-level Adult Corrections Officer (ACO), Juvenile Corrections Officer (JCO), and Probation Officer (PO), effective August 17, 2020. Applicants who have taken the previous version of this exam (BSCC Juvenile Correctional Officer) are unable to transfer test scores, as the new exam version contains updated content and revised scoring criteria.
• Applicants who have taken the new exam either with Fresno or another county after the effective date of August 17, 2020, may submit their results by the filing deadline in lieu of taking the exam again. You must either attach a copy of your results to your online employment application or email a copy to [e-mail].
• The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months.
