Job summary

North American Science Associates, Inc. is seeking a Veterinary Technician to support laboratory animals and clinical procedures in Minneapolis, MN.

You will dispense medications, perform routine observations, monitor anesthesia recovery, perform blood draws, and assist with preventive care under veterinary supervision. Qualifications include AS to Vet Tech or related experience; CVT/ALAT preferred; airway to ensure animal welfare and accurate data collection.

Qualifications

  • Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology or 4 years of related experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is preferred.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or ALAT certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Dispenses medications as prescribed by veterinarian and protocol specifications.
  • Performs routine clinical observations, charting of physiological data, and animal health status.
  • Administers start-up medications and monitors fasting and clinical observations.
  • Monitors animals during recovery including TPRs, auscultation, pain assessment, wound care, and medication administration.
  • Performs intravenous blood draws.
  • Provides preventive health maintenance such as vaccinations, maintenance meds, and grooming tasks.
  • Performs veterinary care and husbandry per established procedures and study protocols.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Dispenses medications as prescribed by veterinarian and/or protocol specifications.
  • Performs and documents a variety of activities, including but not limited to routine clinical observations, charting of physiological data and animal health status, taking study-required animal weights, documentation of maintenance medicine administration, etc.
  • Administers start-up medications, monitors the fasting of animals and clinical observations.
  • Monitors animals during their critical recovery phase on the days following surgery, including performing TPRs (temp, pulse, and respiration), auscultation of the heart and lungs, assessing pain of animals at incision sites, changing wound dressings and administering medications.
  • Performs intravenous blood draws.
  • Performs preventive health maintenance such as administering maintenance medications, administering anthelmintics and vaccinations, ointment applications, hoof and nail trims including sedation as needed, bathing, and ear cleaning.
  • Performs all aspects of veterinary care and general husbandry procedures according to established procedures, guidelines and study protocols that meet the acceptable criteria of the veterinarian.
  • Communicates with veterinary staff, supervisor and study directors regarding living conditions and medical status of animals.
  • Assists with training newer large animal research technicians.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Technical Competencies
  • Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology or 4 years of related experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is preferred.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or ALAT certification is preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Regular exposure to large and small livestock, domestic and laboratory animals, and their blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent exposure to sharps, wet non-weather conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasional exposure to fluoroscopy, work in a Bio-Safety-Level 2 (BSL2) environment and rare exposure to faxitron x-ray imaging.
  • Occasional exposure to gases such as CO2 and isoflurane, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Moderate to loud noise level; hearing protection required in designated areas and during specific tasks.
  • Requires standing, walking, using hands, talking or hearing; reaching, grasping, manipulating equipment; stooping, crouching, kneeling; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing or crawling.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 50 lb, and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 75 lb with assistance.
  • May involve viewing computer monitors and standing for extended periods.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, full color vision, focus adjustment, exceptional spatial acuity and visual-kinesthetic coordination.
Compensation

Compensation Target: $23.00 (Hourly)

The compensation grade range for this position is: $15.24 - $29.57 - Hourly
