Job description

Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

The Hill Lab within the Translational Sciences and Therapeutics Division is seeking a temporary Full Time Research Technician I to join our team.

The Hill Lab uses preclinical model and clinical sample analyses to dissect the immunological mechanisms and pathways of transplant and cell therapy complications resulting in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and anti-tumor immunity. The ultimate aim is to generate testable therapeutic interventions that attenuate GVHD and CRS whilst preventing tumor escape after cell therapy, without compromise of pathogen-specific immunity.

The incumbent will be responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work in support of scientific research by performing bench-level experiments, operating analytical instruments, recovering, compiling and verifying the accuracy of research data; performing calculations; preparing charts, graphs and summaries.

The ideal candidate will be able to work as part of a team as well as independently to follow established protocols. The ideal candidate will have experience handling mice, and with molecular biology techniques. This is a temporary position to cover a leave, with the possibility of extension.

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, all employees are expected to demonstrate a commitment to our values of collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity, and respect.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with experimental mouse analysis, including organ/tissue dissections and cell counting
  • Perform DNA isolations and run PCR and qPCR.
  • Participate in mouse work, which may include husbandry, handling, tissue sampling, health assessments, and preparing and performing treatment injections.
  • May perform data analysis and interpretation.
  • Proactively prepare and maintain laboratory reagents and media, check and replenish supplies, prepare glassware and instruments for cleaning, and deliver autoclaved materials to storage areas.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory area.
  • Carry out maintenance, troubleshooting and QC of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform other duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the lab.

  • Experience with colony management, mouse handling, tissue sampling, injections and necropsy.
  • Basic understanding of animal welfare and ethics.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA extraction and PCR or qPCR.
  • Aseptic culture technique.
  • Flexible and willing to work some evenings and weekends as needed to complete time-sensitive experiments.
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

The hourly pay range for this position is from $23.33 to $33.21 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
