Zymo Research invites applications for a Research Technician - Chemistry on a 1-year contract. The role focuses on synthesizing and optimizing magnetic nanoparticles and bead systems, with emphasis on surface modification and characterization using standard analytical techniques.

You will contribute to R&D projects and collaborate across teams. Qualifications include a chemistry/materials background and hands-on lab experience in nanoparticle research, surface chemistry, and data analysis.

Qualifications

• Bachelors or Masters in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Polymer Science or related fields.
• Strong lab experience in synthetic or materials chemistry or nanoparticle research.
• Understanding of colloid science, surface chemistry, and particle interactions.
• Strong problem solving, data analysis, and experimental troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Synthesize and optimize magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic particle formulations.
• Develop and evaluate particle coating technologies, including silica and polymer-based surface modifications.
• Perform particle functionalization to introduce desired surface properties.
• Characterize particle properties using DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, SEM/TEM, UV-Vis.
• Investigate particle stability, dispersibility, aggregation behavior, and magnetic performance.
• Design experiments to improve synthesis yield, uniformity, and functionality.
• Analyze data, document results, and present findings to the R&D team.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers on product and process development.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and follow safety procedures.

Research Technician - Chemistry (Contract)

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Technician - Chemistry (1 year contract) to join our R&D team focused on the development of next-generation magnetic particle technologies for life science applications. This is a hands‑on laboratory position where the successful candidate will work on the synthesis, surface modification, characterization, and optimization of magnetic particles and magnetic bead systems.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, or a related discipline, with experience in nanoparticle synthesis, colloidal systems, or surface chemistry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Synthesize and optimize magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic particle formulations.
• Develop and evaluate particle coating technologies, including silica and polymer-based surface modifications.
• Perform particle functionalization using various chemical approaches to introduce desired surface properties.
• Characterize particle physical and chemical properties using analytical techniques such as DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, SEM/TEM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
• Investigate particle stability, dispersibility, aggregation behavior, and magnetic performance.
• Design and conduct experiments to improve particle synthesis yield, uniformity, and functionality.
• Analyze experimental data, document results, and present findings to the R&D team.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers on product and process development projects.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and follow safety procedures.

Education and Experience:

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in:
  • Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Nanotechnology
  • Polymer Science
  • Related scientific disciplines
• Strong laboratory experience in synthetic chemistry, materials chemistry, or nanoparticle research.
• Understanding of colloid science, surface chemistry, and particle interactions.
• Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and experimental troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation, Benefits, and Perks:

The estimated base compensation range for this position is $20 per hour at the time of posting.
