The Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University in Medford, MA invites applications for a limited-term Research Technician. This role supports molecular biology and cell culture efforts under the supervision of a senior scientist and contributes to RNA handling, cloning, transfection, and imaging workflows.

The successful candidate will maintain detailed records, assist with data interpretation, and help manage lab operations to produce high-quality, reproducible results in a fast-paced research

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering or related field.
• Experience with molecular biology and cell culture techniques in academic or industrial settings.
• Knowledge of RNA handling, RT-PCR/qPCR and data analysis.

The Allen Discovery Center (see http://allencenter.tufts.edu/) is dedicated to the advancement of basic biology and biomedicine, and to using an integrated approach to control biological structure and function. Through a combination of molecular genetics, biophysics, and computational approaches, researchers at the Center work toward a multi-level control of patterning. Novel technology is being developed to modulate the bioelectric communication that enables cells to coordinate their activities toward specific anatomical and functional outcomes. This new type of epigenetic control has significant implications for developmental biology, evolution, unconventional computation, and synthetic bioengineering. Applications in progress include the repair of birth defects, regenerative medicine, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic biology.

What You'll Do

This is a limited term position, ending November 15, 2027. We are seeking a versatile, experienced, and highly motivated research technician, who will report to a senior scientist working at our Center. This individual will assist this researcher with a broad range of molecular biology and cell culture techniques, including plasmid DNA preparation, cloning, transfection, isolation and preparation of RNA for RNA-seq, RT-PCR/qPCR, cell culture plating techniques and maintenance (such as making stock solutions, media changes and culture splitting), and multiplex cell imaging under a microscope. The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, experienced in producing reproducible high-quality data, able to manage multiple concurrent tasks, and be an excellent verbal and written communicator.

• Conduct routine and specialized experiments:
  • Follow appropriate protocols/procedures to achieve results
  • Suggest ideas for protocol development as needs arise
  • Perform various biological techniques, as described in the job summary
• Record results and assist with data analysis:
  • Keep accurate records of experiments and results
  • Perform limited data interpretation/summarization
  • Utilize statistical software for data analysis
• Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies:
  • Keep inventory and purchase supplies when necessary
  • Prepare/stock solutions and other media

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

• Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1-2 years of molecular biology or cell culture experience in an academic or industrial laboratory
• Familiarity with basic statistics, image analysis software, and GraphPad Prism a plus.
• Experience with 3D tissue culture is preferred, but not required.
• This individual must be an extremely organized person, with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
• The ideal candidate will have the ability to multi-task, be able to work independently, and possess a strong drive toward excellence in state-of-the-art research.

Pay Range

Minimum $20.90, Midpoint $24.90, Maximum $28.90

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
