Job summary

Indiana University Indianapolis, Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, is seeking a laboratory staff member for a limited-term position under the direction of PI Jason Meyer, PhD. The role focuses on stem cell culture and neural differentiation for in vitro disease modeling.

You will perform a wide range of cellular, molecular, and analytical techniques, maintain equipment, assist with regulatory compliance, train junior staff, and contribute to project reports.

Responsibilities

• Researches differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into neural lineage cells for in vitro disease modeling.
• Performs cellular reprogramming to generate iPSC lines and differentiates into neurons/astrocytes.

• Maintains equipment and serves as liaison for training of junior staff.
• Performs laboratory ordering and regulatory procedures (IACUC, IRB, safety).
• Conducts cell culture, molecular biology, and gene editing techniques.

Department Information

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary

This laboratory is under the direction of Principle Investigator, Jason Meyer, PhD.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Researches within the lab focuses upon the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into various neural lineage cells for in vitro disease modeling.
• Conducts a wide range of experiments in cellular reprogramming to generate new lines of induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as differentiation into neurons and astrocytes.
• Prepares reports and conducts analyses of performed experiments.
• Provides some guidance and support to junior-level staff.
• Responsible for laboratory ordering.
• Responsible for equipment and laboratory maintenance.
• Performs regulatory procedures/protocols (ex. IACUC, IRB, chemical safety, radiation safety, and controlled substances).
• Serves as a resource to other laboratory personnel.
• Participates in the tabulation and computation of project results.
• Prepares project research reports/analyses.
• Performs experimental techniques or procedures:
• Cell culture (human stem cell lines), including cellular reprogramming and astrocyte differentiation
• Cell biology (ex. flow cytometry and histology).
• Microscopy (ex. confocal and multiphoton microscopy).
• Molecular biology (ex. DNA and RNA, including cloning).
• Gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9).

General Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
• Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments.
• Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed.
• Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
• Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
• May train junior-level staff.
• May help plan experiments or short-term goals.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

This is a limited term position. Continued employment will be contingent upon the grant funding. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Work Location

Indiana University Indianapolis, Indianapolis, Indiana. This is an in-person position.

Advertised Salary

$39,720.00 per year to $44,720.00 per year based upon experience and internal equity within the department.
